Has anyone been able to use the restore function for Whatsapp? No matter what I do, it seems to skip this step when connecting the app to my phone number… Backup is stored in Google Drive so I am wondering if this is even possible… Thank you.
I thought about sideloading Google Drive, but I didn’t remember if it works without PlayServices, and on a second thought I didn’t want any Google Apps.
What I did was setup Whatsapp on the Kompakt as a companion device, not as the main one. That way it transferred all my messages. This means the actual main WhatsAPP is tied to my iPhone 12 mini which is kept turned off on a drawer and only accessed for Ebanking, SmartID and such other things.
With the companion mode, you just need to access the original phone once every 2 weeks to keep the sync going.
Thank you for the tip @gezimos! Didn’t’ even know companion devices was a thing.
In case others wonder, to setup your Kompakt as companion, you have to launch Whatsapp, accept the terms and condition, then when it is prompting for your phone number, don’t enter it but type the 3 dots in the top right corner instead.
Same here, I didn’t know it existed until I was testing side loading apps it a few days ago. I thought it was only to connect tablets & PC.
I hate Meta as any other person but this Companion mode is amazing when you’re testing a phone temporarily or for people that have two phones
Anyone figured out yet how to transfer chat history yet? Or a workaround that doesn’t require having two phones?
Open WhatsApp on your old phone, navigate to Settings > Chats > Chat transfer.
This didn’t work for me. When I click on Link as companion device, the QR Code does not display on the kompakt.
It worked fine for me for Whatsapp that I installed via Aurora Store.
In Kompakt when it shows to enter the phone number you click the 3 dots and from there u can find the menu link that allows to a set as a companion device and qr code appears.
In your main device go to the Add a new device/companion device as usual (same way u use to connect to web whatsapp or desktop whatsapp).
Thank you! Ok that makes sense. I tried that and it worked this time ![]()
If you figure out any other way to keep old chats without having to set it as companion, but as main device, let me know. I’d like all excuses possible to never use my old device again. kind of defeats the purpose of having a kompakt if i still have to use my old iphone.
Currently I have no android device to test that. My OG whatsapp is installed on an iPhone mini that I turn on occasionally.
Unfortunately the QR code for linking a companion device never appears on the Kompakt. I’ve got the latest OS and WhatsApp (via Aurora), but instead of the QR code I just see a refresh icon/button (which is non-responsive).
