Been integrated into the apple ecosystem until now. My day-to-day really takes advantage of the seamless interfacing of MacOS and iOS. Specifically the way I can message, copy/paste, and p2p file transfer on a without being on a LAN.
When the Kompakt arrives, I do anticipate some frustration by breaking that integration (AirDrop !!), but I’d like to prepare in orderto ease that transition. Are there any things you recommend iOS users do in advance to simplify the transition to MuditaOS/InkOS? Are there any particularly useful iOS-specific functionality for which you’ve found comparable analogs on the Kompakt? Or any more philosophical and habit shifting mindsets you had to develop?
There also seem to be some android *nix-specific concepts that are foreign to me as an iOS user. Would appreciate hearing other’s experience leaving Apple!
If you’re willing to drop iMessage, make sure you disable both it and RCS messaging before you transfer the SIM card to the Kompakt. If you want to continue using iMessage, you can use an app like OpenBubbles. I’d also recommend getting a syncing app like Davx5 and using it to sync your calendar and contacts with iCloud, you’ll need to pair it with a side-loaded calendar app since the native calendar app doesn’t synchronize with Android’s calendar database.
I’ve had luck with LocalSend on my Kompakt, you can only send/receive files from devices on the same network as yours but that works fine for me as I’m usually only sending files to/from my own computer.
This is a very important point. Additionally, please note that deregistering from RCS can take up to 30 days. It usually doesn’t take that long, but some users have reported that it took approx 30days.
I’ve been using Signal on the Mudita, and found that when you send a message to yourself, it starts a ‘note to self’ chat (which you can pin to the top). That completely replaced my airdrop usage as I can quickly send to and from the mudita !
Is it true that Signal notifications don’t appear in Mudita OS? I keep seeing people share incredibly convoluted ways of getting notifications to work, but all of them seem to require the battery running down in under 2 days. Hopefully I’m misunderstanding something.
So Katapult seems to handle Signal notifications pretty easily! Thanks @gezimos. I was able to export a big .vcf file from Contacts.app on MacOS and easily import using the control center application. I’m still not sure if imessages are being blocked, but I was able to speak to Apple senior support on the phone and he noticed that one laptop was still signed in to iMessage. After signing out, I can’t use Apple’s deregistration webpage because the “number is not registered”. This seems like a good sign. I’ll be testing will iPhone contacts this week to see if things are working now.
I seem to be missing both iMessage and what was previously RCS messages. I have fully de-registered and logged out of all apple imessage applications and confirmed this over a phone call with senior apple support. I have no way of de-registering RCS.
However, I suspect that sending an SMS to a previous iMessage or RCS contact “unsticks” either mode, allowing them to reply with SMS going forward. I have not confirmed this with extensive testing, just my anecdotal observations. If you are transitioning from iOS, this might help you.
Of course, I’m still making the effort to invite people to use Signal, primarily emphasizing its stability, simplicity of setup, and rich file transfer and cross-platform feature set (especially compared to WhatsApp , and secondarily its security and ideological value. I’ve had about 50% success rate, which is better than I hoped for.

Also, once you de-register from RCS, delete the old text messages & set up new ones. I’ve never had to do this, but some users reported that this kind of resets the message, so your number is not flagged as RCS.
