Instructions on how to sideload apps on Mudita Kompakt

Most of these steps are redundant now. The Mudita Center allows copying the app files and handles the installing of the files… I feel this post should be updated or archived with a new forum post saying the better way but referencing this older method.

I disagree, the guide is still good.

If you’re going to install a Store like F-droid / Aurora store and you do it through MuditaCenter you’re good to go.

But some people just install specific apks and that is better to be done through ADB, because you might also have to uninstall them which you can’t do using Mudita Center.

Another reason is MC doesn’t support xapk file (apk bundles) but you can install those using adb.

And last but not least, there’s so much more you can do with adb commands, and for beginners installing apps is good simple way to start.

I hope the post is updated to mention the easier approach via the Mudita Center to side-load apps. Most people will prefer this new method as it easier and simpler.

I don’t have any issues with the arguments around why people will still continue to use the older ‘developer options’ method. But for most people it is a messier approach.

I just hope more people see the Mudita Center approach is simpler and easier.
Anyway just my thoughts.

Your thoughts are very valid my friend

Just my observation was that some users got confused and expected they can delete apps from MuditaCenter, because they misunderstood what “delete apk” means.

So hopefully Mudita manages to allow uninstalling apps in the next update, and that would make adb sideloading less useful for most people

Until then whatever direction a users chooses to follow I still recommend:

  • Sideloading a store like AuroraStore/F-droid to manage/update/delete those apps
  • Sideloading a third party launcher that would allow accessing the hidden Files app/ and would allow uninstalling apps

You summarised the two approaches perfectly. Cheers

I’d love to update the post - sadly the forum only allows editing a certain number of days after posting, so I’m locked out from being able to edit the original.

But totally agree - maybe an admin could edit the original post to mention that installing apks via Mudita Center is a lot easier, and a better option for most people.

Wow I wasn’t aware you couldn’t edit the post after a few days it is a shame. Although . I think most people are now aware of the newer method. Both are still valid. Cheers

Thanks for making users aware of the differences between installing third party apps via the Mudita Center vs. through ADB.

1 - Am I correct in understanding that, if I install third party apps via the Mudita Center “App Installer” option, I cannot (currently) uninstall them?

2 - If so, are my remaining options to:

A - Sideload a store like AuroraStore/F-droid to manage/update/delete those apps?

B - Sideload a third party launcher that would allow accessing the hidden Files app/ and would allow uninstalling apps?

3 - If yes, might I ask which method you’d recommend for a newbie and if a step by step tutorial may exist?

Thank you (and the community) in advance for any information you(/they) may be able to provide in reply!

  1. At least until now there hasn’t been any options to uninstall the apps via Mudita Center.
  2. Yes if most the apps you want are from there u can install F-droid First and get Aurora Store from F-droid, that will pretty much have majority of GooglePlay and OpenSoruce apps out there.
  3. Simplest way is download f-droid apk and install it via Mudita Center. Then open F-droid app in your phone, and search Aurora Store up and install it from there.

You might not need both, but I use both:

  • Aurora store from Apps that are in Google play Store like Signal and Whatsapp to manage updates easily
  • F-droid app for open source apps like Fossify, FUTO etc

Thank you for the patient/clear explanation Gezimos - this was exactly what I was seeking!

If I may ask a few more questions:

1 - Is it correct to assume that it’s better to install an app like WhatsApp from the Aurora Store (vs. using the official WhatApp APK - Download WhatsApp for Android) to ensure that it continually updated as updates are released ?

2 - Can you recommend an uninstaller app that I can either load through the Mudita Center or F-Droid or Aurora Store?

Thank you again in advance for any additional info you may be able to share.

@stevenjc123 No problem.

  1. Yes to me it’s simpler to manage updates for apps that update very often via AuroraStore.

  2. With F-droid/Aurora store u don’t need an uninstaller, the apps that u install with those u can remove with those.

If you’re installing other things via mudita center then get “Package Manager” app in F-droid and u can see all apps and uninstall what you want.

This was super helpful, thank you. I would not have had a clue otherwise. Aurora store sideloaded, Signal and WhatsApp added, Aurora store uninstalled. That’s it for me!

Hi, just read your guide, thanks ! BUT i didn’t want to use the web for apk upload (you never know what data they keep) AND i didn’t want to learn command-line stuff… and I found Quickadb worked like a charm for Aurora Store. Even UNINSTALLED Aurora Store (with correct package name : com.aurora.store).
