Installing custom build of muditaOS on MY OWN phone

Thanks for the explanation @Grzegorz_Szmidt

However, there are successful open hardware e-ink in Europe : for example the one made by the Croatian About Us - Soldered Electronics
Has Mudita tried to get in touch with them or other open hardware competitors ?

Dear Elie,

Thank you for your question. At this time, I am not aware of any discussions between Mudita and other companies about collaborating on open hardware e-ink projects. While transitioning to open source LUTs is not technically challenging, it is still a time-consuming process that does not align with the scope of our current projects, including the Kompakt. Based on the information I have gathered, we do not have plans to pursue this direction at this time.

Hi,

I ordered a Mudita Pure which will arrive in a few days. I was under the impression that I could modify the software on it and this was the only reason I ordered one. Clearly, seeing this thread now, this impression was a wrong.

Without the ability to modify the software (more specifically the apps) on it, is no more use to me than a regular feature phone and much more expensive, so I fear I have to return it.

Before I do so, I just wanted to check if there is a realistic chance that users can modify the apps on the phone in the near future. In particular:

  1. The github wiki speaks of an effort to allow community builds. (As I understand it, through special update packages) Is there a concrete roadmap for that? When could we expect any results?
  2. The wiki also speaks of that ā€œYou can ask for the development version of Mudita Center with ā€œupdate from fileā€ capability enabled.ā€. Would requesting (and receiving) this development version allow me to modify apps on the phone? If yes, how can I request one and is the process to do so documented?
  3. Finally, I imagine that it would be possible for you to build experimental branches yourself from community pull requests, maybe even automatically. Could this be a way to allow users to use a modified OS (at their own risk, of course)

If there really is no realistic chance of modifying/improving the software for Mudita Pure in the near future (which would be a real shame, also considering that further development on the phone has stopped, cf post why-mudita-os-development-is-slowed-down) then I would urge to update your documentation and clearly state at the beginning of the relvant pages that user-modifications of the OS are impossible.

Before ordering I did check the docs specifically to see if I could modify the software and as I came across pages like ā€œrunnning on phoneā€ and ā€œsetting up development environmentā€ that gave clear instructions, I thought this would be supported. A small note in the middle of the page effectively stating (in complicated terms) that this is basically useless information for people outside of the company is really misleading!

Well, current state of affairs is …
Is MuditaOS dead since Pure, and partially Harmony will not recieve much bugfixes?
If its king of ā€œdead assestā€ for Mudita it would be nice to make OS and mudita firmware trully FLOSS and letting community modify it and take it further.
It costs company 0, but can give a lot to its users
