Initial thoughts of the Kompakt

if theres a general feedback thread feel free to move this. i just thought id quickly post a few thoughts of my 1 hours with the phone.

Build

The build quality, size, weight are all imo very good. the physcal build of the devices seems well put togeher, no creaking moving bending

the screen is nice, its no carta 1300, and maybe if this is a success a Kompakt 2 will have a higher dpi screen. But its quite legible, and very usable and for the purpose of the device works quite well.

Calls

call quality is also very good. Speaker quality (loudspeaker) for calls was ok, not the best in the world a little tinny, but clear and audible, it doesn’t get super loud but it gets perfectly loud enough for most environments you might use the speakerphone.

i also tested call handover from VoLTE to WiFi Calling and it worked seamlessly without interruption to the call. considering calling is one of the main things for this device, this is excellent. its also very clear on what your using if its VoLTE or WiFi calling.

a note, WiFi calling is disabled by default. you need to go to Settings → Network and Internet → Mobile Network → Advanced → Wi-Fi Calling → (enable) Use Wi-Fi Calling

if yo dont do this, you will use VoLTE indoors which may reduce call quality depending on your signal strength (or if you have signal at all in remote areas  )

(i dont know if thats in any troubleshooting documentation, it might be good to have it)

Oddities and other things

the internal storage seems sufficient, i dont expect to fill it up, its only 32GB but with the SD card slot i see that as the main storage place for people who might want to use for media / music etc.

the built in apps all seem to work quite nicely

Maps i think could potentially benefit from a custom tile set for rendering. I assume its using the default OSM tiles? but realistically i imagine rendering the various shades of colours of every little thing really is unnecessary clutter on the small eink display. i wonder if it could do with a little optimization? on a side note i cant figure out how to see more information for a POI? i can click them, get the name and type but no other info its cut off… maybe im missing something there ?

an important think for maps is the data accuracy as well, it would be good to see some community engagement maybe to help improve OSM data for mudita customers

for calendar its nice seems relativity functional. it would be nice to be able to upload events to it from the mudita centre app, or to subscribe to a calendar (subscribe to protonmail calendar for example)?

the other apps all seem to do what they say

it would be interesting if there could be curated ‘community’ apps if anyone ends up making eink / kompakt optomised simple apps

A weird issues. tap/touch sounds is super inconsistent, the volume changes seemingly at random, making is quite jaring. ill probably turn it off but its definitely a bug

touch vibration is also inconsistent, its enabled… but only works on the hardware keys? no vibration on the screen except using the keyboard, this is inconsistent with the setting…

Mudita Centre

works nicely, but it seems like a lot can be done here to make the kompakt even better. exporting photos (i can see them but cant export them?), ability to upload calendars etc. MPT support perhaps? (though MPT can be buggy in general) it seems like improvements here could make the phone much nicer to use with our other technologies without breaking the purposeful goal of the phone.

overall, its very nice so far. a little getting used to i expect.

i might just add more here as i come up with more thoughts

You can’t export them to your desktop?

Just to note though i can use OpenMTP (on mac) to transfer photos to my computer perfectly fine…

Another little note, i had no issue using Digikam on mac to import photos from the Kompakt (though it shows all media files, i think i need to apply a filter)

Another little oddity of note i mentioned elsewhere. Private (encrypted) DNS is not enabled. this is somewhat expected as its been mentioned elsewhere that Mudita doesnt want to dictate what DNS you use, but theres also no UI element to set encrypted DNS yourself.

it can be set easily through ADB but this obviously isnt an ideal solution. it does work though, i tested the encrypted DNS when enabled via ADB.

it would be nice to have this configurable through the UI as it enhances the Kompakts privacy focus

@eden Mudita Center is catching up to Mudita Kompakt. Our team is working on it. Until then, if you do have a PC (I’m not sure how it works on MacOS)- You can export, add, delete - all that good stuff- using your Files Explorer

A feature to add Music Files will be added.

@urszula

Please consider the Mudita Center file-transfer speed. I just transferred an ebook of 2.2mb and it took 43 seconds. Also the app-opening speed the first time u install is horribly long (like 1 minute).

For me it’s not an issue as I’m using OpenMTP after getting it to work, but OpenMTP interface might not be very user-friendly for some users.

This is MacOS related, on Windows it works quick & well like you explained it in your comment.

ive a mac at the moment, i have found that i can use digikam to transfer photos without issue. and openmpt seems to work though it was a little hit and miss on the first go. MTP is really not a very good standard imo for android but its what exists.

There is another option which is better called MacDroid which allows you to view it as a removable disk in finder. It is paid for though. I’ll see how Mudita Centre develops but I am tempted to pay for MacDroid as I don’t think it was very much
