How big is 1.5.0?

Man, interested to see how big 1.5.0 update is goinng to be. Multiple delays. Implied changes that many have been waiting for. Has to be way bigger than the the Security updates, bug fixes, and sentry opt out. Any guesses? Album songs in order? Honestly, my vanilla Kompakt pretty much has it all. I would like podcasts but not enough to actually get the aurora store or find an apk. The only pain point I have these days is that the songs in a given album are not in order. Usually not an issue unless listening to Verdi’s Requiem or something similar. Order is less of an issue for Paramore but sometimes, there is a story - looking at you Kirk Franklin.

All this to say, I know they inadvertently posted some expected updates but took it down prior to seeing it. Does anyone know what we should be anticipating?

I’m hoping 1.5.0 is packed with features many of us have been asking for. With how long it’s taking for it to be released, I hope it won’t be disappointing. I’m scared that it might be.

I recommend downloading CalmCast for podcasts. Mudita will not make a better podcast app than CalmCast. I guarantee it. I don’t think they even plan to make one at this point considering how popular CalmCast is.

Bigger than 1.4.0, smaller than 1.6.0

So I broke down after visiting the Calm Cast page. Man, it could not be more intentional or better integrated into Mudita. It really is awesome. Bought a small coffee for David.

PS: I am not a coder, by any means, but what purpose does the Apollo GraphQL dependency serve?

I’m also a HUGE fan of CalmCast!

I am surprised it is taking this long. It is now been a year since the phone has been released and in my opinion the updates don’t happen frequently enough. Something as simple as being able to silence text notifications on a phone that wants you to remain focused on other more important things is quite hard to do when notifications are constantly going off, yes I have sideloaded apps to solve this but I would rather not have to do that. Also the one annoying thing is still not being able to repeat calendar events, little stuff like this is quite annoying.

There seem to be five camps of Kompakt users:

  1. Those who like the Kompakt just the way it is
  2. Those who miss certain features and sideload apps to get those features
  3. Those who miss certain features and get annoyed by this, but keep the Kompakt
  4. Those who miss certain features, get annoyed by this, and return or sell the Kompakt
  5. Those who miss certain features and return or sell the Kompakt, but look forward to getting the Kompakt again after Mudita adds those features

Annoyed is all relative. If we look at the annoyance of always being ā€˜on’ and ā€˜tracked,’ relative to those, Kompakt annoyances tend to be fairly minor. Part of it is our own conditioning, no? I am guilty as charged - the need for immediate gratification.

My biggest long-term concern is no US service center. I think I need to buy a second Kompakt to ensure I do not go without should I send my first to service. I’ve had mine for almost a year and it has been money. I did try to sideload signal. Looks like hot garbage. At first I was really annoyed not having Signal…6 months later, no big thing.

All this to say, the friction tends to hit strongest and hardest the first few months of use - I would say 3 to 4 months. The whole RCS google thing being peak annoyance. Once you settle in, feels so much better. My remaining point of annoyance - urban canyons when traveling. But I have also rediscovered the joys of hard/printed maps. Legit fun and the boys and I really enjoy just sitting down, planning our routes and regaining perspective as to location in relation to various spots and direction - app maps tend to have you go up regardless of bearing.

I will likely agree to disagree with many but given their sales and the fact that these forums tend to highlight those, myself included, who are most likely to complain or voice their opinion, I am guessing the vast majority of Kompakt owners are pretty happy.

I bought the Kompakt a few months ago and I’m very happy with it. There are a few things I’ve had to adjust to, but overall my opinion is positive.
I’d like to point out, however, that the community’s impact on this device is remarkable. Generally speaking, some system apps lack some rather basic features (the music app has poor file management, for example, it lacks a timer, the maps app is lacking), and these and other small things combined make the device worse than it could be.
I don’t know if the people who worked on CalmCast or CalmMusic, or on InkOs and Katapult, for example, are professionals, but the commitment and skill they’ve put into these projects is remarkable. These projects have quickly become the standard for this device, and while on the one hand this is great news, because I believe the Kompakt’s success also depends on its community, on the other it’s sad that Mudita isn’t able to implement small updates more quickly and efficiently.
I understand that security is the priority, but having small monthly updates that improve the device’s quality of life would be a great sign to me and would make the device more complete without having to resort to third-party app. But I understand that the team is small and therefore I look forward to the next updates.

I hope this update brings the ability to customize the lock screen, notifications and sounds. For me, these are absolutely the most important things.

Peak annoyance, indeed!

I feel lucky that I never had an iPhone and that I left the Google Android world before Google added RCS messaging.

This means that I never had a cellphone that was seen by other cellphones as RCS-capable and that anyone’s Google Android cellphone or iPhone sees any of my deGoogled cellphones today as SMS/MMS-only.

I wish the kompakt had RCS support, but realize this is impossible due to google’s chokehold on the implementation.

I have to say that I find it really concerning that some issues still haven’t been fixed after a year, or that pre-installed apps still don’t have all their features or work the way they’re supposed to. In my opinion, the focus is often misplaced. Right from the start, instead of addressing actual issues or bugs, they removed the logo from the lock screen because a small but vocal minority on the forum demanded it. Some people wanted the logo back or wanted personalization options, but they haven’t managed to change that back within a year.

And honestly, these major updates that come out only a few times a year really get on my nerves. Go ahead and do that for new features or similar things, but when it comes to issues like the sound problem that cropped up after the last update while Offline+ mode was enabled, or that SMS issue from back then, those just need to be fixed quickly with a small patch.

And I can already see it happening again with the next update: they’ll introduce some new features like A-GPS, but some of the existing problems will remain.
The keyboard is still a nightmare. Extremely slow, the vibration feedback is too late, the autocorrect suggestions are a joke and often unreadable, etc…
As I said, the KompaKt has been on the market for a year now, and things still don’t work the way they should have worked right from the start.

Just like with the Pure (though not quite as bad), they sold an unfinished device without letting anyone know beforehand. And if there weren’t any way to sideload apps, and if there weren’t such a great community programming ā€œMind Appsā€ like CalmCast and others… the Kompakt would have disappeared into obscurity very quickly.
How is it possible that people can spend their free time programming a fully functional music or podcast player and fix bugs super fast, yet the programmers employed by Mudita still haven’t managed, after a year, to get the pre-installed apps to the state they should have been in at launch?

I use the Kompakt every day as my only phone, but this situation really annoys me!

Fair points on the bug cadence – that’s a real tension.

To me, it is about relative effort and perspective. Mudita has moved much faster than Light. Light just launched a developer program sharing their SDK, essentially admitting their team can’t keep up. I use the Light Phone for work and the basics are still far behind Mudita. Light leads in future-proof hardware, but everything runs through an online server and their music player isn’t close to the Kompakt’s basic player.

My perspective IRT the timeline - the Light Phone SDK won’t reach developers until June 2026, vetting starts in August or September, user launch targeted for October. Years into the LP3’s life. Mudita has been shipping actual OS updates the whole time. Light’s updates have been super incremental. Most of the 2025 updates were for the team to better track bugs.

Given the apparent size of the Mudita team and the ambition of building their own OS on an Android core….I am not losing sleep as to the pace of releases. The community apps run on top of Android. They don’t touch hardware drivers, e-ink refresh behavior, Bluetooth stack management, OTA integrity, or battery management. Mudita owns all of that. Community apps and the OS they run on are not the same category of work.

I own both phones. Not saying Mudita is perfect. But if we’re comparing apples to apples – not apples to oranges, dumbphones to Samsung or Apple – Mudita is doing fine. The privacy focus is priceless to me. On security, yes – older Android core, slow updates, legitimate concern. But given my understanding of the threat model (i.e. It’s not Google-connected, not pulling data in every direction), a stripped-down, minimally connected device has a smaller attack surface. Maybe I am not worried enough…who knows. Just to say, overally, I am much happier with the pace of Mudita OS than Light OS, and it is not even close.

This is exactly how I feel. I don’t understand why it takes so long for these updates to come. And when they do, they barely move the needle. This is incredibly concerning, especially since the phone is stuck on Android 12, and the security updates only come with the occasional system updates.

It’s also concerning that the official 1.5.0 release post is locked, and we can’t ask the team questions in the thread about the upcoming update. Why is it locked? What don’t you want us to ask? What don’t you want to answer?

Also, your point about third-party developers: Yes, and I believe all of those developers have full-time jobs of their own, and they have families/children to take care of. How do they have time to make apps that actually make the phone useable, but the Kompakt team whose actual job is to actually do this, can’t do so in a timely manner. Like you said: there are ridiculous bugs that should have been addressed immediately and have yet to be.

This is how it has been with the Light Phone as well: minimal updates, lack of communication from Light, and third-party developers running circles around Light. Two years after LPIII’s release, and the damn fingerprint scanner is still not enabled. Bonkers. At least Light is making amends with their new third-party developer program.

I had to return my original Kompakt because of GPS issues, and I’m still within the return date of my replacement. I have been patiently awaiting the 1.5.0 update, but if it doesn’t release before my return date, I’ll be returning the Kompakt. I love the phone thanks to third-party developers, but the slow as molasses official updates and my Android 12 concerns will probably win. My Android 12 concerns will not stop nagging me.

I feel the same, I wish I didn’t, but I do. Now I’m certain its not all the Kompakt’s fault, I need to revaluate my expectations and needs from a device like this and a company like Mudita. After nearly a year of ownership and use as my only phone, I do wish that I was well away from forums, tinkering, workarounds and updates, but again, maybe that’s all on me too!

I agree with a lot of these points. You are definitely right that if not for community members numerous people would have jumped ship and went to other phone offerings. After one year of release the updates simply have not been good enough. Both the Pure and now the Kompakt always have that one or two annoying things that are just never changed. For me its the the calendar and the text notifications. Also agree that the keyboard does need a upgrade. Luckily for me my goal is to use my phone as little as possible so I have been able to make the Kompakt work for me for now, but now with the light phone allowing people to make apps for it , for example weather I may venture back to it at some point in the future, time will tell. I often find myself in this situation with Mudita. I love love the mission of the company what they stand for etc but they fail in one critical component each time..EXECUTION

I think that with monthly updates, like small ones that fix small things and a large annual update for major changes (like the big manufacturers do), it might be the right direction. I’m very happy to have bought my Kompakt but there are some basic function gaps that require sideloading. For example I don’t think it’s difficult to launch an update with a system timer app built in, I don’t know how many people have asked for this. It’s a simple thing that improves the quality of life of the device.

Returned the Kompakt. I don’t feel confident about the longevity of this device, and the company’s lack of transparency, such as not even acknowledging this post. Android 12 greatly concerns me as well.

I hope 1.5.0, whenever it does come, satisfies many of you, because 1.6.0 will probably come out in half a year (hopefully).

Sorry to hear this. Thank you so much for giving Kompakt a try. Our Managing Director @michalstasiuk addressed the ASOP 12 issue several times, and we did mention that we will not be upgrading to a higher version of ASOP.

As far as acknowledging this post, it’s a challenging question to answer when the release is not out yet, and the team is still working on the update.

Hope 1.5.0 will have group calling
