How are U.S. users planning to set up their Mudita Kompakt? (Carriers, primary/secondary use, syncing, etc.)

Hi all,

For those of you in the United States who are using—or planning to use—the Mudita Kompakt, I’m really curious to hear how you’re setting it up.

A few questions for the community:

1 - Are you using the Kompakt as your primary phone or as a second/minimalist device?

2 - Which carrier are you using (or planning to use) in the U.S.?

3 - If it’s your second phone, how are you keeping calls and texts in sync with your primary smartphone (if at all)?

4 - Are you using solutions like T-Mobile DIGITS, call forwarding, dual SIM, Google Voice, etc.?

I’m exploring the best way to integrate the Kompakt into a setup that allows me to stay reachable while minimizing distractions, and I’d love to see how others are thinking this through—especially given the challenges around network compatibility and messaging sync in the U.S.

Thanks in advance!
Steven

Hi. New York based but I go the UK often, so I’m thinking the Global version would be best. I don’t know the tech ins and outs but hoping the Verizon/Spectrum carrier will work well. Would love to feel a bit more confident though - I know they will accept a return and swap out but that’s a pain. I’d like this to be my main phone and use my laptop for all the “other stuff” like in the good ol’ days (90s).

Verizon Wireless (VZW) uses these 4G/LTE bands:

  • 2, 4, 5, 13, 46, 48, 66

The 'Global optimized’ version of the Kompakt supports these 4G/LTE bands:

  • 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 26, 34, 38, 39, 40, 41

Therefore, the ‘Global’ Kompakt should work on these 4G/LTE bands on Verizon Wireless:

  • 5, 13

1- Primary, I was using an lp2 but currently using an old iphone managed with apple configurator to remove app store, browser and keep only essential apps.
2- At&t since it is what I currently have
3- I have a cellular apple watch ultra I removed most apps using apple configurator and use it as a back up cellular when working in extreme weather conditions.
4- the watch rings when my primary (which will be on the mudita) is called since the watch was set up as a companion to my old iphone, it continues to work if I turn off the iphone before removing the sim, was doing this with an lp2 for some time. Texts do not sync but now i have imessage for a few family people on my wrist if i am wearing the watch.

If I bought the NA version will I be able to use my phone if I go out of the country on a vacation or something? I hope I didn’t make the wrong choice!

As far as I am aware, yes, the NA version still works internationally. It’s just simply optimized for NA.

Short answer: Yes, you should.

Long answer: It depends on your domestic carrier’s roaming partner(s) when you are on vacation internationally.

The “North America-optimized” version of Mudita Kompakt supports these 4G/LTE bands:

  • 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 18, 19, 26, 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 71

If you look up the 4G/LTE bands supported by your domestic NA carrier’s (e.g., VZW’s) roaming partner in another country (e.g., such-and-such telco(s) in the UK), then you can see the extent to which that roaming partner(s) (e.g., that UK telco) supports your NA version’s 4G/LTE bands.

Continuing the UK example: USA-based VZW (Verizon Wireless) roams on carriers 3, O2, and Vodafone in the UK (per a Web search).

Here are the 4G/LTE bands used by those three UK carriers:

  • 3: 1, 3, 20
  • O2: 1, 3, 20, 40
  • Vodafone: 1, 7, 20

Given that 1, 3, 7, and 20 are NOT supported by the NA version of the Kompakt, you would roam specifically on O2’s 4G/LTE band 40 when in the UK and using a VZW SIM card in roaming mode.

And, if you were to buy a temporary SIM while in the UK, then only the O2 SIM would let your NA Kompakt work in the UK (and, again, specifically on O2’s 4G/LTE band 40).

  2. Tello (T-Mobile based MVNO) as a result of adopting my Pure which only works with T-Mo based networks, though I may switch back to Xfinity Mobile (Verizon-based MVNO) if I get a bundle discount with my Internet/TV service since Kompakt works with Verizon as well.

Are there issues when there is only one compatible band?
