Google play Api changes

Might have an affect on custom roms (graphene, calyx, e/os, lineageos).

Thank you for your post, @John_Andersson! A search for this topic in my browser returned this:

Google Play Integrity Support : CalyxOS does not explicitly support Google Play Integrity as it is designed to be a privacy-focused operating system that removes proprietary Google services, including Google Play Services.

Out of curiosity, I just installed my bank’s mobile app on a deGoogled Google Pixel 6 running the latest CalyxOS. I then tried to log in to the app and got this alert:

Enable Google Play services
[Redacted name of my bank] won’t work unless you enable
Google Play services
ENABLE

This told me that my bank’s mobile app requires Google Play services. Given that I have and want ZERO Google software on my CalyxOS-deGoogled Google Pixel 6, I promptly uninstalled my bank’s mobile app.

I personally have NO compelling interest in cellphone-based banking, so my test result does not bother me AND tells me not to bother trying to install on it on a Mudita Kompakt. But, …

Anyone who has a Google-apps-free (“deGoogled”) cellphone can repeat my experiment with his or her cellphone and bank’s mobile app to learn whether that app will work WITHOUT Google Play services.

Good luck!

I suspect that in a not very distant future, any online activity that involves money will require a login method tied to a personal eID, or a similar app based security check. Unfortunately the only “secure” methods that are accepted are based on Google and Apple mobile platforms at the moment.

My bank pushes face ID even enough data is given during registration (to register and after OS updates( under enhanced security. You can turn biometry use off once you are in and I argue with them, but this will not change. Same is for storing data on Apple and Google services, simple gives too much external power that can be used for targeted ads etc.

Where I live, new eID registration needs a passport and a nfc equipped phone. Plus you have to take a live “mug shot” of your face to verify it really is you. In some cases, to get the “high security” level of your eID you need dual verification using passport and drivers license/national id.

I guess its very tempting for authorities to require eID verification even when you are doing basic activities. All in the name of individual security of course. The systems for it are already in place, the responsibility to keep it updated is put on someone else, free and very powerful surveillance is possible.
