From what I read Google is “locking down” Android to prevent sideloading in the name of “security” and “keeping people safe”, and also alienating a lot of Android power users who like the customization, installing custom OSes, rooting, etc. Would that affect the Kompakt much?
Not exactly, there was a lot of noise by open source software developers and they pushed back so Google backtracked a little.
does this mean that graphene os has a reprieve then?
This is related to app installation only. GrapheneOS might be affected in a different way by Google moving AOSP updates to private (until the release day) and who knows by locking bootloaders in Pixels so it can’t be installed. But I don’t think that will happen.
So I talked to our team about this & they said that these verification systems that are being mentioned rely on Google Mobile Services (GMS) which is the proprietary layer of software that runs on top of standard Android. Since MuditaOS K is based on the open-source core (AOSP) and completely lacks Google Services, these verification checks simply do not exist on our phone. We control the operating system, and we will not implement features that restrict your freedom to install the software you own.
Even if they weren’t backtracking, MuditaOS uses an EOL version of AOSP. It’s not getting any more updates from Google. This would only affect newer versions.
