I’d just like to give a shoutout to Garmin for filling in some of the holes currently in the Kompakt. Those being:
Lack of safe NFC payment
Lack of notifications for third party apps
I now receive full notifications for every app, with the ability to even respond to signal messages. For NFC, Garmin uses a different technology than the other large smartwatch brands, making it safe to use with the Kompakt.
“Garmin Pay utilizes a secure tokenization system, where a unique digital card number is generated and stored on your Garmin watch, rather than your phone or the merchant’s system”
I know there are other smart watch options, but I’m assuming anything running a google OS won’t work. Is anyone else using a smart watch with their phones? It does drain the battery faster, I probably get 2 days (3 max) out before I need to charge (I’m also limiting charging to 80%).
Other Garmin Perks
7-13 days of battery life
Web portal so you can view all your stats on a computer (perfect to avoid using battery of Kompakt, plus eink screen makes reading stats more difficult)
I feel that, given the charge curve, the top 20% of battery is quite a bit. I’m now rethinking longer battery life vs longer charging intervals, given that I aim to get a spare battery or two before end of sale whenever that happens.
This is great to learn. I currently use an AppleWatch I was aware I will lose tap and pay. But I was ok with losing that functionality to have a simpler phone experience. At least with the Garmin watch working there could be an alternative out there. I plan to see if my AppleWatch being cellular could still work. If it doesn’t that is fine.
Nice! I got the Venu 3S, but funny enough have until October 5th to return it, which I very well might do if they announce the 4 before that. Great watches!
could you please say how this watch will work with the kompakt? Do I need to side load an additional app for this to work? As I am on the watch for a watch (I don´t like watches, but I may need one) I am very curious about the experience.
Yes you’ll need to sideload at least Garmin Connect, which manages all your health and exercise info. One thing I LOVE about Garmin is that they have a web portal with all of your health info as well. So while Garmin Connect is necessary to have on the Kompakt, I almost always review my exercise and health data on the website on my laptop. It’s really a nice ecosystem.
There’s another app called Garmin IQ, which you’ll need if you want to download third party watch faces or 3rd party apps (like spotify).
