Feature to Silence Texts but Not Calls

I’m sure this one has come up before. I’m surprised there is no way to allow calls to ring but not hear any texts. I think many people are on board with ‘if you need something urgently, call me’. This naturally filters out non-urgent communications while still leaving the user connected for important matters.

With the MK though, you either get all texts and calls, or nothing. And unfortunately the vibration motor is still audible, and there is no way to turn off vibration for texts (but oddly there is for calls). So the only way to truly defeat text notifications is to go Offline+, which completely cuts you off from everyone. Or put the phone on a plush cloth and place it in sight enough to see if a call is coming (I’ve still missed them).

This is really the only ‘missing’ feature I can identify at this point. Assuming my group texts actually start working after 30 days, this feature would be the only thing that would allow this phone to become seamlessly integrated into my life. Stay connected where most important, but filter out all the extra distraction.

I agree with you a year in and this issue needs to be addressed. For a minimal phone that wants us to be free from distractions constantly hearing notification sounds from texts was annoying. I sideloaded activity manager off Fdriod and you can use that app to silience text notifications and turn off vibration as well. This is your best bet till they update this which I honestly don’t know when that will happen. Even the calendar needs to be updated, it is so annoying not to be able to repeat events. You have to put in the same event over and over again, minor things like this have to be addressed. A year into releasing the phone I think they need to do a better job with the speed of their updates. Light as a company has fewer team members and they have pushed out more updates including fixing the issue of not being able to separate text and call notifications. I sold my light phone 3 this weekend and I am committed to using the Kompakt , I do enjoy the phone quite a bit but people should not have to sideload apps to fix basic issues like silencing text notifications

Well said. I am glad that you CAN sideload apps to enable basic features, but (a) this should NOT be necessary, and (b) some basic features can NOT be enabled with sideloaded apps.

I sold my first Kompakt (at v1.2) in part because it lacked (and still lacks today) the voicemail message-waiting indicator and the ability to long-press [1] to access voicemail.

I look forward to getting another Kompakt, but not until basic issues are fixed.

The long press key 1 to connect to voicemail is (albeit a minor) annoyance is as well, which could be easily fixed. I don’t know about the NAM version but the number to contact Voicemail is hardcoded in the SIM card, at least here in The Netherlands.

As for waiting Voicemail calls to be heard, I just received an SMS with either the message that someone has left a message or a message to someone tried to contact me but didn’t leave a message. You speak of a voicemail indicator (which, I assume, requires a network connection to check it’s status). Does your telco operate handle voicemail differently?

@Marco, the voicemail message-waiting indicator is sent by the cellular carrier as a silent SMS or push notification through the carrier’s network, which the cellphone’s default Phone app has the responsibility to interpret and display.

Thanks for your reply @kirkmahoneyphd. I guess that’s operator dependent then, cause there’s not a single Dutch operator which supports that (and I’ve been working in telecom for 25 years, so I’d like to think I know what I’m talking about, although my knowledge is limited to The Netherlands). There are huge differences between telecom operators (within the EU) and even bigger differences between the EU and the VS. I can’t speak for the other parts of the world by lack of experience. We have two operators in the Netherlands who offer ‘visual voicemail’, a paid add-on on your mobile subscription which is Phone only. These will show a voicemail waiting notification, as the voicemail is stored on the phone. For these and all the other providers there’s only two options: an sms or a call, both not silent, to inform you, that you have been called from number x and whether a message is left. Or you can just disable them.

The following explains why Mudita has on its roadmap a plan to update MuditaOS K to support the voicemail message-waiting indicator – given that U.S. and Canadian cellphone users expect it – no matter whether the cellphone and/or carrier can handle visual voicemail or not!

Thanks for clarifying @kirkmahoneyphd . I wish the EU operators would implement something alike (and have Mudita support it as well, off course). It’s another audible notification less for each phone call (I rarely ever answer calls, unless it’s my kid).

There is a way to turn off vibrations via Adb. However, custom notifications & ringtones are on the roadmap for a future update.

Got you, thanks. This missing feature is one of the reasons I switched back to my iPhone a few days ago after using the MK for a few weeks. There are a few other basic reasons, and it is sort of unfortunate because the display is so cool and I liked the phone. I may do a quick, separate writeup for feedback.
