I’m wanting to get the kindles out of my house so I need something that is:
De-googled and privacy focused
E-ink
E-reader
Also does audiobooks
Would like ability to draw/sketch/take notes.
For my oldest daughter, she would like to be able to type with a keyboard attached offline then upload via USB or wifi if need be.
I use the supernote A5X (newest version is named Manta) and it is the best device I have ever had - something I use daily privately and for business pretty much every single day since 4 years (and it continues to get better by updates). I think it it covers all your points except audiobooks. though probably via sideloading and bluetooth it might be possible, but I would not count on it. It is a great device (but also quite expensive, as it is really made for professional usage).
I second this. Bought an A6X (Nomad) and use it daily to track my days, my calendar and such. It’s such a delight to take notes on this device. I do not regret not getting the bigger A5X Manta one, because it fits more easily in a smaller bag.
I have both the Supernote Manta and Nomad. I agree with the other comments here that these are both marvelous e-ink tablets, but I use them primarily for taking notes and annotating files. It’s also great for drawing. However, I feel that other devices work better as e-book readers (e.g., PocketBook, Boox). It depends on your primary use, and Boox is not necessarily privacy oriented.
Exceptionnal devices for notes-taking and annotations indeed. PDFs are really well supported on them. I also adore the calendar which I now use all the time instead of saving events on my smartphone (here’s that I wish Mudita OS would support calendar sync so I could find them on the Kompakt as well).
And totally agree on the fact that book reading is quite meh. I thought the larger screen compared to my Kindle Paperwhite would be a good point, but I found the experience not as smooth as on the Kindle. The fact that there is always something else displayed on the screen is distracting for me.
Never tried Boox, but totally in love with my little Kindle that has been serving me for years for the whooping price of 89e…
Interesting, thank you for the replies! Our main focus would be ebooks and audiobooks, but would need an actual headphone Jack since we do not do Bluetooth headphones.
I’ve been looking at a nook glow light 4 pro because it seems to do ebooks well and has an audio Jack, but I don’t know how privacy oriented it is.
I love my tolino vision color which is a custom version for the German market of the Kobo Libra Colour. Audiobooks as well as a stylus are both supported. They used a de-googled Android up until the last generation of devices, but starting from the current one they switched to Linux.
I have the Note Air 3C and the Viwood AI Mini. Both are great devices but I definitely prefer the Viwood Mini over other e-ink tablets. I have tried the Remarkable Paper Pro and the Onyx Go 10.3. The RMPP is good and I love the layout, but you’re unable to side load apps and you’re not able to change the pen. Ultimately, I didn’t like the writing experience for RMPP, so I returned it. The Onyx Go 10.3 doesn’t have a backlight and I also didn’t trust BOOX devices after mine started to freeze. I tried the Viwood first and switched to the mini shortly after. I didn’t like the writing experience with the main Viwood device. I use it for school daily, so writing is extremely important to me and being able to have quizlet and apps for school purposes. I also like how portable the Viwood Mini is and I use the AI feature to explain my school powerpoint slides. You have to play around with different devices and note which ones you like! Some prefer the writing experience of the RMPP but I personally like the Viwood AI mini writing feel. The main Viwood and the mini have different writing because of the screen texture that is put on them!
Another happy Tolino user here I currently have a Tolino Vision 4 HD and love it. Will be upgrading to the Vision Color as well soon since the stylus intrigues me (and maybe will help me save paper).
Happy to hear that you love your tolino as well
My vision color also isn’t my first tolino device since I’m using them for a couple of years now. I’ve gave my previous tolino to my wife and she already loves it as well. Next one will go into the hands of my 9-yr old daughter since she already is a passionate reader as well
Heh, for me it’s the other way round When I get a new e-reader, the old one goes to my parents. They’ve started to like them and love that you can change the font size (both of their eyesight has gotten worse as they got older). So far, they have my old Kindle but I shall introduce them to the world of Tolino soon
