Extended eval, long trip

I recently took a 12 day road trip, using the Mudita Kompakt as my sole device, to test whether I can use it for international travel. This is what I personally found:

  1. I use Mint mobile as a carrier. It works well in the US (voice & data), but data did not work for me in Sasketchewan/Alberta. When I crossed the border into Canada I did get a Mint text saying I had 3GB data to use internationally. I tried toggling data roaming/LTE/etc with no luck. RV sites with WiFi worked okay, but few and far between.
  2. I used offline maps: 1) A search for a specific address didn’t return State/Province, just city/Country so difficult to know which option to choose 2) Search results didn’t include address number, just street name; 3) refresh rate was too slow to use while driving (my navigator was holding/using Mudita); 4) For me, search results were too inaccurate or confusing to be usable
  3. Camera photos showed excessive softness on edges and highlights were frequently blown out, even when focus points were changed
  4. When taking landscape photos, the second shot of the same scene always rotated the image 90 deg clockwise, sort of frustrating to evaluate image post shot
I carried a secondary camera, so the photo issues were not a big deal. The most important function for me was offline navigation. We brought paper maps, but sometimes there was just not enough detail to assure successful navigation in rural areas or complex intersections. The Kompakt just didn’t work well enough for me to rely upon while driving or for finding specific addresses. The other finding was many RV parks mandate payment via web site. You drive up to the entrance to get a site and pay, and they told us “you need to do that on the web, they don’t allow us to handle money here.” Without a web browser or Internet data connection we were almost out of luck. The gate attendant took pity on us and allowed us to use his phone to pay for the site.
There are probably solutions that I missed or didn’t know about, but without the ability to search for solutions it limited my ability to solve the issues.
