WHAT IT IS
A minimalistic audiobook player built specifically for the Mudita Kompakt’s
4.3" grayscale e-ink screen. It’s a personal fork of Voice
( GitHub - PaulWoitaschek/Voice: Minimalistic audiobook player · GitHub ) by Paul Woitaschek, reskinned with
Mudita’s own MMD design system so it looks and behaves like a native
Kompakt app rather than a ported Android app squeezed onto e-ink.
It keeps all of Voice’s audio engine and feature set — chapter navigation,
sleep timer, bookmarks, playback speed control, silence skipping,
auto-rewind — and changes the parts that don’t work well on e-ink.
USABILITY / WHAT’S DIFFERENT ON E-INK
- Zero-animation UI: every screen transition, dialog, and button state
change is an instant cut. E-ink ghosts and smears on any animation, so
none of the usual Android motion/transition effects are used anywhere. - Monochrome theme: pure black-on-white throughout, no ripple effects,
no grayscale gradients that turn muddy on a 16-level e-ink panel. - Author-folder library browsing: books are grouped by author folder
with counts, instead of one long flat alphabetical list — easier to
navigate with e-ink’s slow redraw and the Kompakt’s directional input. - Now Playing bar: shows the currently loaded book instantly, without
waiting on a persisted playback position to load. Pinned to the
bottom of the library screens so you always know what’s queued up. - Simplified sleep timer: one default duration plus shake-to-extend,
using the phone’s real accelerometer — no fiddly duration picker
needed for the common case. - No telemetry: no analytics, no crash reporting, no remote config, no
background network calls of any kind. The only network activity is an
explicit, user-initiated cover art search (“cover from internet” on
long-press) — otherwise it’s fully offline.
LICENSE / CREDIT
GNU GPLv3, same as upstream. Full credit to Paul Woitaschek for Voice’s
audio engine and architecture, and to Mudita’s MMD project for the
design system this is skinned with. This fork exists purely to adapt
both to e-ink hardware.
