Dumbing down a Smartphone

Oh, hello! I had not seen this! I’m a big fan of Braun, they do minimalism very well… in fact my last alarm clock before the Mudita Harmony was a Braun

Off to research this watch in horrendous detail now, thank you!

EDIT: Case size of 45mm and I found the Moment too big at 38mm… the other features are just right… so close but yet so far!! I look forward to the Mudita equivalent :grimacing: :innocent:

That’s a shame on the size. The Braun style was developed by a designer called Dieter Rams, and you’ll see his work clearly influenced the Light Phone 3, which is unquestionably a fabulous piece of industrial design

As I have now received my Kompakt I have further dumbed down my iPhone, as I will be carrying both devices for now.

The things I have now done successfully are:

  1. A black background, dark mode and greyscale to make it less attractive.
  2. Notifications on for Phone and Messages only.
  3. Only 4 key (non-addictive) apps on the desktop, everything else squirrelled away.
  4. Reduced apps to 9x (see below list).

Apps

Useful tools (not addictive):

  • Calendar (synced with my household which is very useful)
  • Camera
  • Maps
  • Music
  • Phone
  • Settings
  • Weather

Can be slightly addictive, but I have made peace with it so monitor my use:

  • Messages (I have silenced notifications on some groups)
  • Photos

Removed via Screen Time, so could be reinstated in emergencies:

  • App Store
  • Safari
  • Wallet

Third party apps:

  • None

I have removed the following as I no longer have the iPhone paired with a dumbed-down Apple Watch:

  • Fitness
  • Health
  • Watch

I am instead trialling a Garming Vivofit 4 and using it as I was the Apple Watch; so time/date/activity tracking only. Not as pretty as the Braun but nice & minimalist… so far so good!
