“No, I don’t have a smartphone.” is my simple answer to many questions:
- Can you scan this QR code?
- Can you open the URL that I text-messaged to you?
- Can you chat by video with me?
- Can you record a video of that and then send it to me?
- Can you check your email inbox for something that I just sent to you?
- Can you go to that Google Maps location that I just text-messaged to you?
- Did you see that YouTube video (whose link) I just text-messaged to you?
“No, I intentionally have a cellphone that cannot [fill in the blank].” is my longer answer.
A friend recently posted – with NO explanation – a Google Maps location-URL to a group text-message (MMS) thread of which I was a part. I asked him in a one-to-one (SMS) text-message why he posted that URL to the thread. He explained that another participant in the thread was asking during our breakfast together about the restaurant address for our upcoming lunch. And, he told me the name of the restaurant, which I already knew and could find in the CalmMaps app. I gently reminded him in my one-to-one text-message response that I intentionally do not open URLs on my cellphone.

I don’t need a smartphone. I can leave home without it. The Kompakt, to me is an upgrade from my flip phone.

Just to point out that at least one person ordered a Kompakt after reading my blog post. I didn’t expect that but I guess it talks to some people better than AI pictures in marketing emails

I’m afraid I might run into difficulties one day as I have no spare / secondary phone and my desktop PC is under Linux. But so far it’s been a relief. What is still a HUGE issue is the presence of computers at home (except my Amiga 
& at work. It’s still a constant struggle - a fight I always lose and drives me completely mad.
I wonder… What % of the population do not meet most of the assumptions in the list ?

I also tell people I don’t have one.
I work in IT, and refuse to be permanently connected via Teams or Outlook to work stuff - the Mudita / LP2 has been a game changer. For authentication to anything M365 at work, I have a Yubikey, which works well. I’ve been called a Luddite more than once
I do have an old iPhone… but they don’t need to know that. It’s mostly turned off.
