In my situation options would be nice to have the backlight turn off after a duration, and enable an option to keep my phone unlocked (never auto-lock). What do you think?
I can manually lock the phone when necessary of course.

You can disable the backlight by tapping the icon on top of the brightness bar in the screen that shows when you tap the third hardware button. To keep the phone awake you have a few options: you need a third party app like caffeine, you can enable stay awake during charging in developer options and there’s probably an option through achieve this through adb, but I don’t know which. Maybe something else can jump in for that.
I am more interested in the backlight timing out to save battery, the static screen doesn’t need to be locked, the e-ink display isn’t using power.
I am the only one here, I don’t need the phone locking all of the time to view things - but still I agree, it’s a choice in the settings, people can have it auto-lock if they want it to.
In my opinion, not having to unlock the display conforms with other operating system standards, and personally, it would make the using phone less stress causing.
I agree that an unlocked display would be a nice option. My Light Phone is configured this way and it’s my preference. There’s very little reason to lock a phone that only contains chats, call logs and a contact directory.
The best you can do is to disable the pincode and fingerprint recognition and select Swipe Up in Settings > Security > Screen lock. It will still take two steps: push side button to activate screen (and it’s sensitivity) and swipe up to unlock. Will that fix you issue?
