Developer's questions

Hi,

I’m the developer of FBReader, an ebook reader for Android devices. I recently got a Mudita Kompakt — it’s a great device, congratulations! While I understand the firmware is still quite new and evolving, I have a few questions related to app development:

  1. I installed FBReader via the debug interface, but I couldn’t find a standard way to uninstall it. Long-pressing the app icon in the launcher doesn’t bring up the usual Android menu. Is there an alternative method to remove apps?
  2. I understand the device currently doesn’t include a browser. Do you plan to add one? FBReader uses a browser view for authentication on network resources, and the current system WebView does not support Google sign-in (Google doesn’t “recognise” the browser as valid).
  3. The FBReader icon looks quite poor on the E Ink screen. Is there any way to provide an alternate icon optimised for the device without creating a separate APK?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best Regards,

– Nikolay

I’ll try to answer some of these:

1 - I you installed via adb you can uninstall via adb. Mudita OS doesn’t allow for app uninstalling. With the new update 1.2.0 they have introduced apk installation through their Mudita Center desktop app and you should be able to uninstall through that (but I think only if you uninstalled through that). The workaround is to install a third-party launcher like Nova Launcher and you can use it to uninstall any sideloaded app.

2 - I think a lot of people here are against a browser being included in the phone so I can’t answer that. But I did have to install Firefox so I could temporarily login into an app because the webviewtester wasn’t allowing me to login. Removed it afterwards.

3 - Currently the default Mudita launcher doesn’t allow any customization of icons. There hasn’t been any mention of such features coming in the future.

Nikolay,
Off topic but I love FBReader. Thanks for all of your work over the years! I have been using FBReader for about 15 years- starting with the Nokia N700.

FBReader Premium works well on the Kompakt and syncs with my Google Drive ok (with F-Droid’s Microg installed). TTS works as well.

You can also uninstall sideloaded apps with Obtainium if you install them with this app.

@gezimos incredibly, Mudita Center only lets you you install apps, not uninstall. For uninstalling you have to use adb or a third party launcher. I don’t know why the Mudita team even bothered giving us that functionality in Mudita Center. For which kind of user is that meant? The only use case is installing f-droid or another store. Mudita should hire a functional or business analyst and write some proper user stories.

@nilss I think it would be useful for people that find ADB intimidating, there’s a lot of people who are afraid of the terminal look.

But I agree that just installing is useless unless you’re using it for F-droid/Obtanium/Aurora

how can I purchase the version for Mudita? I downloaded a free APK from the site.

and the second question: @fbreader could you please add an option to make the font more visible on the Mudita’s screen? I can change the font but this is not enough…

You can download and install Premium version for free. As long as your device doesn’t have Google Play installed, the app will work without requiring a purchase. This is an officially supported feature, not a hack or a loophole: FBReader Premium: purchase terms – FBReader

Could you please share a screenshot? To me, the default font looks fine.
