Desktop Messaging on a Mac

Hello, I’m an iphone and macbook user of 15+ years making the jump to Mudita next week when it arrives. The only thing I can think I will miss at the moment is the Messages app on my desktop. People are always texting me at work and that is the main form of communication. It’s like our slack. So this may be a silly question, but is there a desktop app for a Mac I can use to message people from my Mudita? I’ve never had an android so…all this is new. Thanks

@miguelnewzealand Hi Welcome to the Mudita Forum. We’re glad you’re here. We do have a desktop app- Mudita Center:

However, currently it does not support messaging on Mudita Kompakt.

ah ok. i see it does it for the Pure. Is this something that will be added later? And if not, is there no third party app i could use that you know of? thanks!

@miguelnewzealand I’ll ask the team- but in the meantime- I think Beeper has a desktop app.

I haven’t used it, but I believe @kirkmahoneyphd has this app sideloaded & may be able to offer some insights.

I have never used the Beeper app, and I do not know what it does. Sorry!

Beeper consolidates messaging from multiple services such as Signal, Slack, WhatsApp, FB Messenger, etc. It has both mobile and desktop apps. You can only have one account per service. I’m not sure what the current requirements are for iMessage, but it might be something like the default texting application on Android: you have to have the official Google messaging app on the device where you receive SMS in order to retrieve the texts with Beeper. I haven’t used iMessage in a long time, so I could be wrong.

Thanks, @lisa. I would never sideload the Beeper app because I have no interest in using multiple services. Anyway, thanks for the thorough description. Sorry, @urszula. I am not the subject-matter expert on Beeper!

Understandable. I use it because my contacts are scattered across services and it’s impossible to get everyone to agree on the one to use. I’d rather do this than install multiple apps.

Yes, please do let us know if SMS messaging in the Mudita Center for the Mudita Kompakt is on the roadmap.

lisa can you use on the mudita? Because it seems to ask for google messages on your phone and there are no google services…

I’m using Beeper on the Kompakt, but not the SMS service. I doubt it will work, but I’ll try tomorrow anyway.

thanks. I’m a bit bummed cause I thought I could figure this out. Truth is my computer sucks me in and steals my attention…and so does my phone. I was hoping I could use the mudita to make only my computer the draw. But if I can’t get my messages on the desktop…I know i will compulsively check the phone.

anyway…maybe someone out there knows a fix. I do see something called Airdroid which looks promising.

@kirkmahoneyphd Sorry, I must have confused you with another person. Now, I’m confused LOL

I checked and unfortunately, Beeper has discontinued support for plain SMS. It can only retrieve messages from the Google Messages app. There’s still an Android SMS / Matrix bridge available (Matrix is the protocol that Beeper uses), but this requires more work than you may want. SmsMatrix

One way is to install BlueBubbles in your Mac and keep it running. It works as a server then sends the messages to your android as well so you can be in sync. If you want to just keep one number you can disable your nr from iMessage/apple and use your apple id email for that.

did the team say that desktop messaging would one day be available in Mudita Center? thanks

@miguelnewzealand Unfortunately a decision has not been made yet, however, they are aware that this is something that our community would like to see.

if anyone here cares about desktop messaging wanted to share that I found something called KDE connect for MAC which seems to work. It’s pretty jenky and ugly but you’ll at least be able to put your phone away all day and know when someone from work is texting you.

You can use this on Linux too (I’m using GSConnect in GNOME). I was surprised to find that it’s available on Windows, too! Happy to be able to text from all of my machines.
