Dark Mode / Inverse UI

I would love to see plans to offer a dark mode or inverse UI via a future software update before I take the plunge and order a Mudita Kompakt.

@mack Currently, we don’t have an inverse option planned, but we’re looking at feedback from users, so it could be added after the premiere, however, we can’t guarantee anything.

+1, would be a very cool feature especially because of the black bezel

It might be interesting to see. I think there it might be better for an eye to keep the standard mode but inversed would give interesting look. How about battery use on eink in such case? I presume no difference but I’m no expert on eink.

As an experiment, if you sideload an app that can run hidden activities for you (e.g. Activity Manager from F-Droid), under the Settings app (com.android.settings) you can start the Settings$AccessibilitySettingsActivity and under “Text and display” you can find the color inversion sub-menu. I configured it to the Volume Up + Volume Down shortcut.
Personally I think this built-in Android color inversion doesn’t work that great with e-ink, and text is much less readable. A real dark mode could work better but it would probably be a lot of work for the Mudita team to add one.

I’m also interested in this feature. I am testing the Mudita Compact and still using the Lightphone II and I only use my Lightphone in dark mode.

My feedback: Even if Mudita adds an inverse option, I will NOT use it. I have NO interest in dark mode.

Many people use dark mode on computers and smartphones with traditional display technologies because it is easier on the eyes.

  • Traditional display technologies use transmitted light.

But, E Ink makes light mode easier on the eyes.

  • E Ink uses reflected light.

Imagine print-outs in “dark” mode, with white text on a black background. Yuck!
