Custom Mudita Kompakt App- CalmDirectory

Oh, there it is, thank you!
I could only see the instructions to build the app initially.

The timer app reference… it’s part of an ongoing theme here on the forum with what we’d like to finally see on the device.

Ahh, gothca. I too found that a very interesting omission. A simple clock app with a timer function seems very doable.

This is awesome.

It’s using google API? any way to use open street map data instead? Probably less complete, but would be a cool option

I’m really appreciating this app. I am currently traveling (with my Kompakt- of course) and it’s really coming in handy.

It does currently use Google Places API but OpenStreetMap looks interesting. I’ll do some research to see how well the data competes with Google Places. The hard part for most 3rd part data services is the operating hours of businesses.

There seems to be a nice API that uses OpenStreetMap that I can try. I’ll let you know when I have a moment to test it. Geoapify as an Alternative to Google Places API

Awesome, love to see that!

I already have a file explorer or two; just thought it was strange that the original post described this app as such.

Yeah it’s strange to have a file on your phone called “Joe’s Pizza - closed on Saturdays”. Probably malware :stuck_out_tongue:

I love the idea of this app and understand that google has the most accurate data out there for a directory, but the whole experience of being deep in the googleverse trying to create an API key and pretend I understood anything was too intimidating to me to be honest. I will keep an eye out to see if anything comes of this Geoapify alternative.

Totally understand. I would love to drop the need for the api-key input altogether but that would require a paid license and would probably have to be passed on to the end user. I’ll post here when I get a moment to test with the Geoapify api.

Of course, I understand. Thank you for trying to develop cool stuff for the Mudita community anyway

Yes. It feels really great, that programmers like you support our small group here with an e-ink-phone  I would also love the possibility to get off the google api, but I can totally understand why you and your app relies on it. Keep up the great work!

I installed the APK via sideloading, but I can’t find the app name to uninstall it. For CalmCast, for example, it’s com.calmcast.podcast.
What is the exact name of this app?

EDIT:
I figured it out. The package name is:
com.example.helloworld

Indeed it is :joy:. I started this project as my first android app and totally forgot to go change the package root. I’ll have to add this to my list of changes.

How do I get an API key? I am not registered with Google, nor do I want to create an account there and give them my data.

If you’re able to wait, I’m actively working on a version that will allow you to select Geoapify as the data source. I’d say I’m about 75% done with it.

And dy by day the Kompakt is becoming more like a normal 'smart’phone. Why don’t you guys just buy an iPhone 200, Samsung Galaxy 10.000 or whatever if you all install these kind of apps? I thought buying a Kompakt was to avoid all this (Google) nonsense in the first place?? Now you just have a normal smartphone, but very slow and with an e-ink screen. Why?
Also, a lot of Kompakt owners use Whatsapp = Meta = evil. Also, why? I want to avoid these big evil companies where I can, for me that was the beauty of buying a Kompakt. Now so many people turn their Kompakts into normal smartphones I kinda beginning to dislike the phone… Don’t know but it’s becoming more and more a ‘just like every other phone out there’ now.
