I purchased a Mudita Kompakt and I’m hoping to tap the community’s creativity on how to actually get use out of it.
Here’s my situation: after purchasing and reading the comments about security and privacy, I consulted with someone who specializes in personal cyber/privacy hygiene, and based on their assessment of my particular threat model and needs, they advised me not to store any personal or private information on the device. I’m not looking to debate that conclusion - I’ve thought it through and I’m comfortable with it for my own circumstances (I know others have looked at the same questions and landed in different places, and I respect that).
What I’d love help with: given that calendar, contacts, messaging, personal notes, etc. are off the table for me, has anyone found genuinely useful ways to keep a Kompakt?
Any creative angles/ideas would be really appreciated.
Out of the box user experience: I purchased it as a phone, to replace a flip phone mainly because of the battery life and screen, and text is easier, but I rarely use it for text.
I am not impressed with the battery life, it’s no where near the advertised duration, but sufficient for my needs.
It’s a phone that I use to receive forwarded calls to from other numbers, more reasons than I can explain.
I have an iPhone that I continue using for non phone
The kompakt hotspot works great, I have two SIM cards, one card plan has unlimited data.
Most of the security risks come from being connected to the internet
Calendar - I believe is safe enough to use locally rather than a shared web based one.
Notes- can be secured by using locally rather than stored notes password protected apps like safe notes work fairly well.
Messages- I would recommend installing Molly a foss hardened version of signal, sms is not secures and WhatsApp is part of the data harvesting Meta
Contacts- don’t see a privacy risk there personally, but you could always make a list of contacts in a password protected note and access them that way .
I do agree that there are genuine concerns regarding privacy, something I recently started doing is, I now use a secure thumb drive made by datashure, it has a physical keypad to unlock it, it plugs into the Kompakt usb port and is recognised as a storage device, I put all personal documents on it and store it separately. They have proven security and have been tested by 3 letter .
If you use the above and don’t browse the internet, most risks are mitigated I believe.
