Choosing a More Present Relationship This Valentine’s Day 💛

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner!
I don’t know about you guys, but I often associate this holiday with grand gestures: Expensive dinners, lavish presents, lots of heart balloons & flowers (preferably a dozen long-stemmed roses).
However, personally, I feel that what relationships really need, right now, is something quieter: more presence.

We’re kicking off our Valentine’s Day campaign with a new blog post, “Choosing a More Present Relationship With Mudita Kompakt.” It explores a reality many couples recognize, not a lack of love, but a lack of attention. Notifications, scrolling, and constant digital noise have a way of sneaking into the moments that matter most, especially in the evenings and at bedtime.

The goal was not to put forth any rule, but more about awareness and choice. About noticing how technology shapes our habits and how small changes can create more space for connection, conversation, and calm. Mudita Kompakt appears in the story not as a magic solution that will fix everything, but as a tool that removes one common source of distraction- which is the smartphone.

So, Mudita Kompakt users, we’d love to hear from you:

Since you switched to Mudita Kompakt, have you noticed how this is affecting your “together time” with your partner?

Do you guys have any small rituals that help you stay more present together?

For those of you that still don’t have a Mudita Kompakt, would you change anything about how you use your smartphone around loved ones?

Read the blog here and join the conversation below:

More offline. More love.

Questions for Kompakt Owners

If you have a Kompakt and your partner has a smartphone:

  1. How has this affected your relationship with your partner?
  2. How has this affected how you see smartphones?
  3. Do you now rely on your partner to access information and apps that you cannot access?
  4. Would you prefer that your partner also have a Kompakt or other minimalist cellphone?

Question for @urszula

Has Mudita considered offering a Valentine’s Day special for couples – two Kompakt cellphones at a discount?

I have definitely noticed more how much people are ‘sucked into’ their smartphones. Prior to switching to the Kompakt I was already not carrying my iPhone everywhere so I would notice this, usually during waiting time at events, but since not having a smartphone at all, and coming to realize a smartphone wasn’t truly necessary for me, I’ve been reflecting on the smart phone’s negative impact on one’s psyche. In our area, we often see people walking down the street/walking their dogs and staring at their smartphones. It is mind blowing that they are that addctive.

My partner is aware I have a Kompakt, but he doesn’t really know what it is and isn’t interested. I know this so I don’t talk about it much. While I really like the Kompakt, it isn’t suited for everyone. He recently got a newer iPhone and while he does not carry it with him everywhere, he does check it first thing when he comes back to it. Funny I used to do this but wasn’t really aware of it. He really likes the convenience of being able to look things up at any time. Sometimes I ask him to check this impulse when the kids are around. The kids are beginning to think the phone is god. Anything we can’t answer is met with ‘ask your phone!’ I find that disturbing. I also noticed when I am talking to someone, how often we are interrupted by something a friend has to show me on their smartphone. More often than not it distracts to other things.

Our family has a rule-- no phones at the dining table, no phones when doing an activity (such as board games) together. It works well with being present with each other.

Since not having a smartphone I think I have gotten more patience with my kids. One of them has commented that I’ve been in a better mood. I do think I was more short-tempered before due to being distraceted more often.

I’m a people watcher, I’ve always had been- so it really trips me out when I see people at restaurants, bars, cafes (generally places where people go to hang out TOGETHER) and they are all on their phones. The biggest RED FLAG for me is when they walk their dog & they are staring at their phone. They have no idea what’s going on around them & they are walking the streets with their pet.

The dog is walking them

Agreed! Because of smartphones, many of us:

  • No longer feel pride in deep knowledge;
  • No longer are ashamed at not knowing what formerly was common knowledge;
  • Feel that we have permission not to know anything.

@kirkmahoneyphd AGREED 100% I’m a nerd, so I love learning new things & acquiring new knowledge. However, nothing irks me more than someone saying, well, ChatGPT said…blah blah blah.

Well, ChatGpt is not the end all & be all of knowledge.

I saw another issue recently. Even years-on-FB profiles start using GPT for post writing. Sometimes just to build the post structure but the style is still visible. A bit off-putting for my mind.
What’s even worse, people got so much used to such form, that some unconsciously write in that style on their own. :open_mouth:

@buiosu I’ve also noticed the AI images which totally creep me out.

Owning a dumb phone does have a huge impact indeed. Not acquired the Kompakt yet, still sticking to an extremely bad / buggy / annying HMD / Nokia phone (they are ALL junk, frankly). But it does work.

I still struggle when at home, with the computer. Still haven’t found a solution to this. (been trying for 25 years)

Maybe it’s time to finally get a Mudita Kompakt

I’ll wait for my current dumbphone to die not to waste resources even if it’s a PITA to use
I want to emphasize the fact that this “HMD” company that has the Nokia IP constantly releases supposedly “new” dumbphones but they is almost no actual development on the software side and ALL the models are plagued with numerous bugs for the simplest tasks I tried 4 of them !

(the Kompakt wouldn’t solve the issue with the home computer anyway as I did overcome the smartphone addiction issue
