Cellular Signal Suddenly Stopped Working

This morning after switching on my phone I noticed that there’s no cellular signal on my MK. It simply shows an exclamation mark in the top left corner. The sim works fine on my iPhone 13 mini.

I’ve created a ticket with support.

@urszula Have I posted this in the proper way? How can I get some help please?

Thanks.

Update: It’s working again now. What’s interesting is that I removed and replaced the SIM from the tray multiple times, but this had no effect. Restarting had no effect. Then, just out of curiosity, I toggled the Do Not Disturb switch off and back on again, and hey presto, cellular was back. It’s a peculiar implementation.

@petemeister I’m glad you got it working.

Just out of curiosity, was your device in OFFLINE+ overnight? Or was this just a random cut off.
I want to pass this on to the team so they can see what could have potentially caused this.
Just as a note- I’ve had something like this happen with traditional smartphones when I’m coming out of my underground garage- where there is ZERO signal, the phone had trouble reconnecting. I had to put it in Airplane mode & then turn Airplane mode off in order to reconnect.

I was turning the MK off last night and about to lay on my bedside table (as per routine) when it slipped a few inches and my finger accidentally enabled the DND button. (Let’s call it that for now.) I realised and disabled it before the device shut down. So, in the morning it should have recognised the cellular service. It definitely recognised that I had wifi. I would’ve expected that restarting the phone and removing and replacing the SIM would’ve had the effect of recognising the cellular service, but it didn’t. It was only when I toggled the DND switch to enabled and then disabled that it recognised cellular service. Bizarre.

There is a bug in the Offline Switch that manifests differently to different users.

To me when I turn the offline switch at night, in the morning I disable it and I have to manually turn on wifi because it won’t re-enable it.

This started like a week after the 1.2.0 update where Camera un-wired itself from the Offline switch and wouldn’t work unless you gave the camera permission in the developer options.

I didn’t look too deep into this but it could be “intent verification” system utility that I’ve seen crash on the background that has caused this issue for me.

@petemeister It’s actually completely expected unfortunately with the OFFLINE+ mode because it completely takes you off the CELL GRID- it basically it cuts power to the GSM modem entirely. From the carrier’s perspective, this is identical to pulling the battery out of your phone. The device is completely gone from the network.
So, when you flip Offline+ off, (turn ON the connection) the modem has to fully reboot, reinitialize, and reattach to the carrier network. That’s why this takes time. It’s gotta initialize again.

I know you’re referring to it as DND mode- but it goes further. And you’re probably thinking it’s kind of like Airplane mode. Think of it this way:

So the short version:

  • Airplane Mode = “sleeping radio.” Quick to wake up.
  • Offline+ Mode = “radio unplugged from the wall.” Has to reboot and renegotiate its place on the network when it comes back online.

Because Offline+ fully powers down the modem, when you switch it back off the phone has to:

  1. Boot up the modem hardware (like plugging it back in).
  2. Scan for available networks.
  3. Authenticate and re-register with your carrier.
  4. Rebuild a data session (if mobile data is enabled).

That whole chain can take longer than with Airplane mode, where the modem is still “warm” and can resume almost instantly.

That said, the extra time you experienced before the signal bars show up and SMS/data flow again is a direct consequence of Offline+ being a true disconnect, not just a paused connection.

Hopefully this makes sense. Sorry for being so wordy

Thanks for the explanation @urszula. I find as I whizz through my forties that the mot juste escapes me occasionally. The term I was struggling to remember is Offline mode. I’m grateful for the fuller details, but I was aware that it was more than airplane mode. Be that as it may, my sequence of actions should have have restored cellular service.

To recap:
(1) Offline mode was off (meaning it should’ve had connection) when it was powered off.
(2) At power on, it detected my wifi. This establishes that Offline mode was disabled. Yet it didn’t find cellular service.
(3) I restarted the phone – it still didn’t find cellular service.
(4) I removed the SIM from the tray – it still didn’t find cellular service.
(I repeated steps 3 and 4 a few times with the same result.)

(5) While powered on, I toggled Offline Mode on (meaning severing all connectivity) and toggled it off again (meaning restoring connectivity).

Even though the Offline Mode was disabled (meaning connections were enabled) during several restarts and SIM removals, the phone wouldn’t find cellular service. It was only after enabling Offline Mode and disabling it that it recognised celluar service.

The crux is that while Offline mode was disabled (and wifi was working), restarting the phone made no difference. This should be the ultimate override. It is in every phone I’ve used except the MK.

I was trying to find the place I’m sure I read someone else having issues with offline switch being a bit easy to switch - and I have discovered mine is this way inclined too. I am guessing this is from when I put it in my bag and it just flips the switch somehow or half does.
I feel like it should be a very tough switch, a bit like the silent switch on iphone, but it feels a bit wobbly on my device :frowning:

@umalum Hmmm. Mine has some resistance to it. Do you have a case on your Kompakt?

Yes I’ve got the case on it. I could do a video of it I guess - basically if I gently brush my finger over it it moves about, it’s not fixed if that makes sense.
