I’ve side-loaded Duckduckgo onto my kompat. I’m using it infrequently, as I’d hoped. However, when I do use it it’s very sluggish: slow to load pages and respond. Is this just the limitation of the phone’s hardware or are other people having better results with different browsers?
I side-loaded Brave because I needed a browser for setting up some other side-loaded apps I have. So far, I like its performance. It’s fast enough to get things done but still doesn’t tempt me to browse all the time.
I don’t really want a browser on my Kompakt, but just in case, I installed EinkBro and then hidden it using the App Layout settings.
The browser looks good and is worth a look.
Just tested it…really good.
I use AdBlock Browser because it blocks ads… as it’s name suggests ![]()
I use the Via browser, as a truly lightweight alternative.
I thought long and hard about this, because a browser is a gateway to much distraction. But the Mudita has a browser anyway. If you get a hyperlink in Beeper, Whatsapp, e-mail,. etc., you can open it. I did find that browsing on the Kompakt is slow, annoying and painful, by courtesy of the e-ink screen, so I don’t feel like using the browser too much. Many dumbphones, even old Nokias, had basic browers to find things. The browser does replace some apps: I can find my train schedule and get information on delays, I can search with Kagi, I can access my Fastmail calendar etc.
The Via browser has some nice functionalities for e-ink and minimalism: block images, reader mode, text size, save to pdf (and then the pdf appears in the reader app!), a clear data button and also you can configure it to clear all history and cookies after quitting. It also has a QR code scanner built-in. My homepage is just some bookmarks.
+1 for einkbro which I’ve got hidden. Perfect add on for the kompakt if you want a browser
I installed Beeper and sent myself some key favourites in the note to self feature, and they render perfectly in the built in Web viewer
I had some problems making eink bro the default browser.
Here is what helped:
adb shell cmd role add-role-holder android.app.role.BROWSER info.plateaukao.einkbro
Thanks for this!
have you gotten einkbro to effectively be used for video playback? I am unable to get it to recognize that i am watching video so the volume key still only works for ringer volume not media playback volume, and rumble videos specifically glitch throughout.
I had the same issue when attempting to use youtube on that browser, my solution is that i just stopped using that browser for anything media related. I advise downloaded pinepine from f-droid, it is a client that allows you to play youtube videos, different options such as putting it in the background and even allows you to download videos as an MP3 to listen to podcasts etc on your music player. it has been a gamechanger for me.
thank you for the tips
