Brightness and Volume Slider Behaviour

I wanted to hear the opinions of other fellow users about the volume and brightness sliders and some issues I have with them.

My issues:

  • In the logs I checked and the brightness slider is 1-255, so 255 levels. I measured my used brightness levels and they’re 1-24. Never more than that, doesn’t matter if it’s pitch dark or a sunny day. Which makes the rest of brightness levels useless to me, they’re too bright for any scenario.

The issue is, that it’s very hard to be precise from 1-24 (because that’s ~10% of the slider).

  • Other issue is with the volume slider, it has 15 levels of volume which is pretty standard. But the lowest volume 1 is too loud for night usage. When compared to an iPhone 12 mini the lowest volume in the Kompakt equals~ the 50% volume in the iPhone.

So the same issue here is the lack of precision in lowest volumes, and that is too loud to be used during sleep unless you’re using earphones that have their own volume controls.

As one user has reported here the adaptive brightness is blinding and useless in this phone.

So the question is, am I the crazy one or the brightness/volume sliders need an increment update?

No, I agree with you.
The brightness I use is slightly lower than yours, and the volume is consistently at lowest level.

I’m 100% agree about the brightness – I can’t imagine using it above the level you do. With volume I actually find myself using not the whole range but close, e.g. I put it in the upper quarter when outside as I carry it in a bag, not in a pocket, and in the lower quarter when inside (can’t testify regarding night usage, as I switch to offline at night).

Yep, same here, always using very low brightness. Listening on headphones with low volume is difficult, too. It’s either too low or too high.

@karl

That’s what I get with my fat fingers, it’s kinda difficult to be precise. The real use scenario would be half as that 10-16. And in pitch darkness like 2-5 maybe.

So literally utilizing only 0-10% of the slider

@nilstzh @pok Thanks for your insights, I appreciate it!

I agree with you. I only use the lower half of the slider for both sound and light. They need to be adjusted.

I always use brightness at the lowest setting I can manually adjust. Depicted is what I my optimum. I mean that’s what I always thought eink is for. For me the backlight switch should be 1/0 in the drawer, with an option for light detection but only to the preset level!

As for the volume - the big beautiful Bluetooth bug bars me from having an opinion on the subject :person_shrugging:

@tymonique In darkness my usage is the same, my use is like 2-3 out of 255, the amount is invisible in the slider. What I hate about it is that It takes time to adjust the brightness to that level.

@urszula Can you send some feedback to the developers for this?

@gezimos Definitely. I will pass it on

100% agree. Never brighten my screen above 10%

Yeah, and the fun begins every time I accidentally touch that slider. Let’s say I have a lifelong experience in being clumsy, but that’s a bit much for me XD

Thank you for your time to explain this clearly @gezimos! Wholeheartedly agree with this  I’d love for it to be a more subtle like faders on specific DJ mixers where the beginning is ever so subtle en the ending you can throw it in. That in combination with a bluelight filtering extra extra matte paperlike screenprotector… amazing. A person can dream <3

@urszula I’ve got some video evidence

I’ve managed to access the default brightness slider which has the correct non-linear logic.

As you can see from the video at same level of brightness the default AOSP slider shows ~50% meanwhile the custom Mudita one is at ~10%. I very much prefer the AOSP logic on this.

I’ve managed to make a shortcut option for my launcher to access it, so for me it’s good enough but other users that prefer to use the default Mudita Launcher might benefit from this ux change.

The volume increments remain a problem though

@tymonique :frowning: yeah same issue with me, if i move it a little it takes a while to adjust it perfectly.
@purejoy2408 yeah I would enjoy a more matte screen protector even if it makes the display blurrier,

this has been quite entertaining to see how effectively you’ve solved all pain points with the phone through a launcher lol…Bluetooth bug fix next?

@ryanness Technically it’s possible to write a bluetooth widget and include it, but I hate to use libraries and bloat the Launcher. Trying it to keep very light: going under 3mb in next update.

I was planning to create a simple page with controls for wifi, data, brightness volume, location, bluetooth, hotspot that people can configure based on what features they want.
However that currently is not possible because they’ve taken out the accessibility permission that is required for most of these. So maybe in the future

@gezimos is there an archive of prev releases that could be accesed?bcs maybe there is a way to toy around with solutions available with older releases, see if that works sufficiently and stay on that level? Just skip the updates.

@tymonique There is, at least for Global variant. I haven’t seen the ota for NA model anywhere. I needed to update to 1.2.0 only to test my map, I didn’t need any features the update brought

When the app is in a good state, I’ll guess I’ll make an update and try a downgrade if they don’t bring those back. Or I’ll just root the device
