Thank you, @urszula. You have, in my opinion, some truly brilliant lines in this blog post. You helped me to appreciate that my current cellphone (a Sunbeam Wireless F1 Orchid), like the Mudita Kompakt, sits between dumbphones and smartphones. I ordered the Kompakt to replace it because the Kompakt has these advantages:
- readable-in-bright-sunlight (E Ink) screen
- larger screen
- longer battery life between charges
- support for sideloading of apps
I have never liked that Jose Briones and others use “dumbphone” to describe my Orchid. “Minimalist phone” is a much better descriptor for it and the Kompakt that will soon replace it.
Very good post! I have been talking to some friends about the example we set to our children in our own use of technology. I was using a Lightphone II but the directions shortcomings made it impossible to adopt as a daily driver.
One of my favorite things was that my children noticed it and liked the little black and white phone. After I found a way with apple configurator to remove safari, the app store and have a list of allowed apps it has been helpful but the screen is just too much and battery only goes for a day, for now I am back to using an old iphone with just the apps that I really need. It is however very hard to explain that no I can’t scan that QR code because I removed my browser or that I don’t keep my email in my mobile when I am obviously carrying around an iphone.
Asking around I heard I could possibly load magic earth for some directions on the kompakt and ordered one to try it out. I have been using magic earth on our drives and it seems ok in black and white. Imagine my surprise when my daughter showed me she had found a way to make her watch be black and white too.
I hope I can switch permanently to the kompakt and order one for the children when they come of age, That or a light phone.
