@buiosu Like @solv suggested NewPipe is exactly how I use “youtube” to stream the audio for some podcasts in my native tongue that can’t be found in other sources. You can also download the audio which is very convenient. It supports YT but not Rumble.
can anyone confirm if the Kompakt works with a hardware security key, like the Ubikey. I realise this not really related to this thread, but I posted a new thread asking this and, havent had any response
Good question. Did you try login somewhere where you got Passkey to see what will happen?
Also could you give me some ideas on what uses you have in mind - so far I only got my emails, Patreon and Amazon - protected with my Ubikeys. Most places don’t have option to use them or I still don’t know how. It’s bit overwhelming if you’re not a pro in those types of things.
I’ve been thinking of getting a hardware key for some time, after researching them the Ubikey seems to be the best option, I was hoping to move all my passwords onto it, email, amazon, ebay, etc.
I understood most online services would accept it as authentication, and that it would work with popular operating systems and hardware
I got same misconception before buying it - Yubikeys are not password managers - they are 2FA (Two-factor authentication).
For sites that implemented Passkey (Google, Amazon etc.): you still have to put your email/login at the site and then password for your hardware key. So instead of remembering multiple passwords you need one for your hardware key. Than on top of that you have to touch it - it’s protection from someone hacking you and using key in your PC - confirming physically that it’s you in possession of the key logging in.
But so far only few places implemented Passkeys - making it rare luxury.
Everywhere else you can use 2FA. Benefit of Yubikey is that you can install Yubico Authenticator - and than this part of the process requires you having physical key to pass - harder to use but also harder to get scammed/hacked.
But in this case you still need to:
put your login and password (that you have to remember or have stored in separate way like password manager software).
And then as a second step you use your Yubikey: either scanning it/plugging in and touching it or you open Yubico Authenticator put in your key and than copy your time-based one-time password from it to login to site.
So your Yubikey is storing either your Passkey accounts or accounts with 2FA (time-based one-time passwords) but in this (second) case first step still requires you to know and put in your password from memory or some other way of storing it.
Are you confused yet?
I’m still 50/50 to fully get it and nowhere near being able to fully utilize it. And so far I only use it with my PC - so no idea how it all translates to phone.
Oh, and if you got Password manager software - you can (sometimes) use your hardware key to protect it (again only way to hack you then is with physical access to your key).
Also don’t forget - you need to buy at least two - it’s like with your home keys - you need a spare key in case you lose one.
thanks for the detailed explaination, not at all how I understood them to work. From what you have explained, I think its probably not the way for me to go.
I currently have a datasure encrypted usb key with a physical keypad that unlocks it, the security is extremely robust, it works across multiple devices and operating systems, i have been copy pasting username & passwords from a text file, sored on it, and to be fair it works well, I thought ubikey would steamline the process, but it appears not.
Hi bone_naga, thanks for sharing what sounds like an awesome config!
If I may ask a few questions:
1 - How did you / can one install the e-ink mode browser extension for Brave browser?
2 - Re Key Mapper, it says "accessibility service must be enabled, I clicked “enable” and that took me to the Accessibility settings but I can’t figure out how to enable - can you share how you were able to?
- You can install the extension from the Chrome Web Store (Brave is based on Chromium). Just search for e-ink in the store.
- Which MuditaOS version do you have? I installed this app on the original stock OS version and then I believe that menu disappeared with the next update, which naturally complicates matters.
Well it’s kinda like walking, talking and chewing bubblegum at the same time - impossible from point of view of a toddler, but after you learn it - you do it automatically without even thinking about it.
The encrypted USB is a great idea - but it only protects from your own mistakes. Say company gets hacked and your account info gets released. Or somebody phished you and has access to your machine (with keyloggers/screenshots) - they can steal your credentials and use it.
With Yubikey I can give you my account info - and it’s still useless as long as you don’t have my key in possession (and it’s password).
Security and streamlining the process unfortunately don’t go together - but after you learn it - adding extra steps is not that big of a deal.
@bone_naga Might you be able to share specific steps on how you were able to access the chrome webstore on Brave Browser? I’m getting a message that it’s only available for desktops (and not mobile/android)…
OpenCamera - much better than the stock camera app: I completely agree with you but, when using the Mudita SMS and clicking on the photo gallery, photos taken with Open Camera do not appear here and cannot be sent via SMS. Have you encountered this issue and figured out a workaround to share?
MuditaOS version 1.3.0: Re menu disappearing with the next update naturally complicating matters, yes! Hopefully this gets resolved in 1.4.0???
-HereWeGo and SherpaTTS: Sherpa for text to voice so I can get the audio turn-by-turn directions, and I like HereWeGo for maps because it offers navigation and I can choose to be online or offline.
Might you be able to share how you got this to work? I downloaded and installed both apps and, within SherpaTTS, I downloaded desired language and clicked apply to system setting. I then opened Here WeGo Maps and tried to “Open Phone Settings” under Voice Options but get the error message / pop-up “Setting Stopped Working”. I wonder if this is/was an option available in an earlier version of the Mudita OS again…
Have you tried installing Brave apk through Aurora store?
@gezimos
I tried NewPipe now and it seems to do the job. I like the fact that I can download audio, I oftentimes download YT videos being concerned they may be taken down one day.
Grayjay seems to do its job too.
I prefer to not have video display capability, I’ll have to look around the settings (being overly cautious because I’m not staring at the screen anyways, but this shows me my children would have to not be allowed to get Aurora Store on their MKs :D).
Thanks guys!
Yes, I have download Brave through the Aurora Store and it’s working great but I don’t know how to install the link chrome extension referenced, do you?
Gotcha. I didn’t know there was an eink extension. On my end, Brave works fine as is; I also use it on Supernote Manta for a few progressive apps. I’ll look into it and let you know if I find a way to install the extension.
Yeah it won’t work in 1.3.0 but supposedly it will be fixed in 1.4.0.
SherpaTTS took a bit of trial and error to get it working. Do you have developer options enabled? I had to go into the settings, go to system, go to developer options, and then use the search bar to search for text-to-speech, then select SherpaTTS as my preferred text-to-speech engine. It’s been a while but I think I had to do that first, then open HereWeGo and select SherpaTTS as my TTS within that app, it was kind of a pain and it took a few tries to get it going.
It is also possible that it only works because I did it before updating but looking now under 1.3.0 I was still able to pull up TTS in the dev options so I THINK you should be able to do it.
I can’t help you there because I don’t use the Mudita SMS app, I use the Fossify SMS app.
Ah, that makes sense! May Iask why you use (and may prefer) the Fossify SMS app over the Mudita app (other than I’m guessing the ability to attach photos taken from Open Camera)? Asking bc maybe I should be using it too!
