Bank apps - some actually work

I’m a relatively new Komapkt user and understood the common knowledge in this forum and elsewhere that bank apps don’t work on degoogled devices like this one. On a lark, I installed my bank’s app (Ally Bank in the US) through Aurora and found it is 100% functional. I am shocked and quite happy. I’m sharing just a word of encouragement to try out sideloading apps you want to use, sometimes you’ll be happily surprised. This is super helpful, as I use Zelle to pay some vendors to avoid swipe fees.

I’m hoping that TD one will work. I’ll figure it out in Wednesday when I’ll receive my phone.

I just tried it out for you. It can get at least to the login screen, so that’s something!

Oh that’s good to hear. Thanks for taking time to try it!

Then this phone will fully replace my fold 7. I was afraid that I needed to keep it for the banking stuff but not anymore.

I’ll have everything needed from this one.

Hey chadp, would you mind checking if Capital One Mobile will load on the MK?

Sure, I have a capital one credit card, so I’ll be able to test login and everything. I’ll get to it tonight.

I sideloaded the Capital One app from Aurora Store. It seems to work fine. I was able to log in, view my balances, and transfer funds between accounts. I was also able to use my fingerprint to log in. What I didn’t try was mobile check depositing. The interface is clearly not designed for eink but it is workable.

Edit: I’m attaching screenshots that I ran through AI to remove my personal details and replace them with dummy info. Any misaligned digits is a product of the redaction, not an actual display issue.

I wonder how it is possible that all these banking apps work on the Kompakt, when there are no Google services present, and MicroG is also not installed. I was being told even by my bank that no bank app will work when Google cannot confirm a customer’s identity.

Has the Kompakt not been de-googled properly after all ?

The Cap1 app even sent me a 2FA text since I was adding my account to a new device. Very interesting, right? I haven’t rooted and/or installed microG. Everything standard plus some sideloaded apps.

Very interesting indeed. Maybe Mudita can explain this ?

This is perfect, Chadp … thank you for all the help and screenshots!

Trust me on this: they have no idea at all. In fact, nobody has any idea. The app itself is more than probably subcontracted to someone who subcontracts to someone who use “app templates”. Add vibecoding and nobody knows anything.

They simply says “Google required” so they can blame any problem you have on you not having Google and calls it a day.

The bad news is that an app working without Google could suddenly break at each update because, for whatever reason, a new update use an obscure Android API call which requires Play services.

That’s exactly how it feels like… everywhere. It also explains the current global political situation. Humans are stupid.

Any security concerns with using banking apps on the Kompakt?

If the notification comes by text (like a code that you input in the app/ or login to an online service) that’s completely normal & nothing unusual.

I even get codes from Google when I login to my gmail from an unknown location.

The main reason we don’t recommend using banking apps on Mudita Kompakt is that since we currently don’t have an app store, and since Google Play is not supported, users might get their apps from third-party sites, which may or may not, (we don’t know), provide regular updates & we don’t know what the actual source of that app is or if it’s been compromised in any way. That’s the main reason we advise against it, since the safety is not know, so we’d rather advise on the side of caution.

I should have clarified - I mentioned that Cap1 ran me through 2FA to reiterate that the app/my bank was acknowledging I was using a new device (the MK) and still let me in. I get 2FA texts all the time, that’s not the interesting part of the story.
