hi,
I did participate in Kickstarter for Mudita Kompact not really because i wanted to switch to the phone, but wanted to try it as a product. But since my current phone has been damaged i am now considering of switching to it as main phone (when it gets delivered). But i have some worries…
I see that you are preparing software Mudita Center for data transfer and backups.
My past experience with software for data transfer and backup function has been bad to worse to completely unusable (as it was with iTunes for iPhones).
So the question is, if this functionality will be there without using specialized software?
Meaning, 1) will we be able to connect phone to computer and transfer files using USB protocols?
2) will we be able to import and export CSV contact files?
3) will notes be able to export as txt files?
I did have knowledge that it is already existing software. But not relevant to my question…
Problem is:
for what operating systems or ecosystems is it built for? Windows ecosystem? Macintosh ecosystem? any of Linux operating systems? how about Unix
So if i use non-supported PC operating system how will i be able to backup my device?
I have multiple old and still functioning devices, that can not be used as they are limited to backup and interact with specific PC software. Like old time Nokia 3330 (or even older phones). How about old PDA’s… All now collect dust as the software in unavailable and not compatible with newer windows computers… And no software were ever made for Mac, Linux or Unix.
So the point is for a phone to be backup-able it needs backup option outside “our software”. Maybe not everything backup, but photo, contact list and notes most definitely needs to be able to be transferred to PC without a software. those are simple text files…
Even modern phones like iPhone are only ever connecting with computer if the computer has software installed. Which means when that software is corrupted, you need to reinstall it. And in case of windows it is hidden, so for most people option is to reinstall the whole PC to get to connect iPhone to it…
so yes, i am asking, if the Mudita Kompact will have option to connect to a PC (Windows, Mac or any other PC), as software is not a reliable solution long term.
The features that MuditaCenter offers are rather simplistic and intended to be user friendly. Kompakt runs android, and android is far more open than an iPhone. When you plug an android device into a computer, it will present its filesystem as if it were a flashdrive. You really don’t need any special software for this. Exporting contacts, messages, etc, are all rather easy to achieve on an android device, it might just take a little bit longer in the event that MuditaCenter stops functioning.
Mudita has taken the best approach they can with MuditaCenter, as it is open source, meaning it can be updated by users down the road even if Mudita were to shutdown. This requires technical knowledge, but the point I’m making is that they have done all they can to address the concerns you mentioned.
I use Mudita center for clocks and briefly did for Pure phone. So its just for Mudita products.
As you could see on page above, it exists for Linux,. MacOS and Windows.
Enables update, backup. mp3 upload, some additional options depending on device.
Clean, nice UI and most important - working. Needs USB cable connection to PC, no wireless connections.
