After using the Kompakt for a month after its North American release I decided to try out the light phone 3 which I used for 3 months. Although I enjoyed my time with it I truly missed eink, so I sold my light phone 3 and purchased a black Mudita Kompakt. I am going to try using it as is out of the box, I sideloaded apps last time but I am going to try the phone out to start out as it was intended to be used. Glad to be back and I see the forums are active as always!
As an early LP3 user (April 25) - I think you made the right choice. I came late to the Mudita party but it is now my daily driver. I side loaded for about three days before doing a factory reset and enjoying the MK as intended. The e-ink is absolutely a huge draw, but so is the greater overall transparency and communication of the team.
I’ve said enough in other posts but now my only concern is having to buy a second one when I turn this one in for a new battery. I hope that will be in 4-5 years as I cap the charging at 80% - still good for 3 days with heavy use, more if I am consistent about shutting down WiFi and Bluetooth.
The vibe lives up to the Mudita’s dharmic concept of joy.
I am actually really enjoy just using it as is, I know the keyboard response is not fast but I think for my ADHD impatient brain thats a good thing, I do notice however that the reception is not as good indoors from when I previously had the phone, I can still get calls and texts but they send out with a minor delay. Not a big deal but I don’t get why this continues to be an issue with their phones although it was a much bigger issue with the pure. Like this morning I did get a call from my kids school so they were able to reach me but it cut out for a bit where she had said a sentence and I missed it entirely, so I had to walk outside the library, this was irratating but yesterday my wife called me and I was in the basement and it was fine so not sure whats going on, I am on lucky mobile which is bell and reception was good before, like right now inside the library the bars went from like half of 1 to now almost 2, how is this North american optimized.
Honestly, I have not had any issue. I did toggle the VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling to “on.” Use WiFi at home only. Regardless, with both of those toggled on, call quality has been pretty good and consistent. I use to think it was a strength of the LP3, but my family tells me they cannot tell a difference.
Are you in North America? I actually find the texting a bit better, not sure if there were updates to the keyboard experience since i last used the phone in late may, but I feel like there is a definite improvement, I don’t want to sideload my only issue is not being able to separate text notifications from calls. This is the reason is sideloaded another sms app, when I am at the library trying to focus, I hate hearing text notifications sounds, but I need the phone loud enough so I can hear my kids school calling if they need to reach me. I really hope this gets fixed in a future update, not sure how long I can put up with this until I cave and sideload again, I just don’t like how sideloading apps effects the battery, without sideloaded apps the battery can last like a week
I am in North America - using Mint Mobile as my provider. Love them.
Its funny when I am inside my house I have 5 full bars, but at the library it was spotty, but like I said texts still went out just the signal was not as strong, interesting its so strong in my house, not sure why its different at the library
Sometimes it is the band and repeaters used by your provider - lack of penetration. Could be where the library is situated and thicker walls. I get no reception inside one of the local targets with Mint (running off T-Mobile) but AT&T works fine.
I had to send my kompakt back due to the offline+ switch switching itself on and off, it was very wobbly. I was very sad about this as I really really loved it. The Eink is so great.
Lightphone 3 is my other choice but still feeling sad about leaving Kompakt ![]()
Wouldn’t that be under warranty? No issues with my switch whatsoever- solid.
Did they send you a replacement?
Definitely a warranty issue. They user should request a replacement.
No, I have just sent it back as a return. I think I read somewhere here where someone else had a wobbly button, so it kind of made me nervous of trying again. But honestly - as I’m currently using a dumbed down Jelly Star (which is just an android smartphone, but TINY - 3 inch screen), it isn’t nearly as nice as the Kompakt. I really didn’t expect to love the Kompakt so much but I miss it! Maybe I should try a replacement? @urszula is that possible to make it into a replacement instead of a return? It will arrive tomorrow (currently with FedEx).
This is my current jelly, i’ve disabled all browser stuff etc, so it only does calls and texts - but it doesn’t have the amazing chess like Kompakt
(and of course it doesn’t have the lovely e-ink).
You can definitely tell them to replace your device. My OFFLINE+ mode button is not loose at all. It’s quite sturdy & there is some resistance. You can even hear it when you switch it on.
Definitely reach out to the customer service team to tell them you’d like a replacement
Thank you, yeah mine was showing the notification on the screen flashing on and offline (when I first noticed a problem), so the little notification screen that comes up when you switch it on or off was showing online, offline in a flickering fashion, if that makes sense.
I then looked at the button and it looked like it was partway between off and on (i hadn’t had it in offline mode for a couple of days at this point). And noticed the switch was loose, when I brushed myf inger over it it was easy to move - not fully either way, but shouldn’t move obviously at all unless I want it to!
I will try asking customer services if they could replace it. Thank you!
@umalum I will also put a note in your return ticket, so there is no confusion.
Thank you! I messaged them (my name is emily hare, but i’m guessing you’ve figured that out already being you’ve put a note on my ticket!).
You guys really are the best.
@umalum You’re website is in your profile
Nice art BTW
I did let the team know & either Diana or @robert_gwarek will take care of it.
Hey @umalum , the Jelly looks really nice for those not ready to make the e-ink step. But is it strongly tied to Google? What about the uninstallabre crapwares seen on most Android phones?
The Jelly Star is a regular Android phone, so not privacy-oriented at all. It also has no offline switch. However it is really small, so it’s quite nice to hold in your hand, almost like dumbphones 20 years ago. But the screen is tiny too, so you can’t really do much with it. Some people have flashed the Jelly Star with LineageOS, which is also a de-googled OS, and installed a minimal text launcher. If anyone wants to try this, it can be turned into a minimalist phone as well.
