Audio Quality Enhancement

Hey there,

I noticed that the audio quality of the Mudita Kompakt is pretty decent but bad compared to iPhones (which I am coming from).

Now, Apple does this sneaky thing, were they play the higher frequencies through the speaker at the top of the phone and the mids and bass through the bottom one. This makes music sound unbelievably crisp and full.

Right now, the Kompakt only uses the bottom speaker, which feels wasteful considering the principle I described. Are you/we able to change that? I mean, it should be a fix on OS level, right?

Let me know what you think!

Cheers,

Nico

@Nico Thanks for this post. I have asked our team if this is something that can be done on Mudita Kompakt, because, in all honesty, I have no idea.

It seems to be possible. ChatGPT says:

“Route the music stream to both the bottom speaker and the earpiece in the audio policy/HAL, then apply different EQ or crossover filters per output (high-pass for the earpiece, low/mid for the main speaker). This is best done in the audio HAL or DSP so each physical speaker gets its own frequency band and volume limits. You must also tune gain, phase, and protection to avoid distortion or hardware damage.”

It is definitely not an easy task, especially the finetuning. But it will be worth the effort, since playing music is one of Muditas main purposes.

The only issue that could come up would be an earpiece that is too weak. I am really looking forward to new insights!

Seriously, what does playing music on a smartphone have to do with listening to music? No matter how good the smartphone is, it sounds awful. And somehow, I immediately picture people on public transportation annoying others with the music playing from their smartphones. How that whining from smartphone speakers gets on my nerves. Just like phone calls and voice messages through the speakers. Please listen to music with headphones and hold the device to your ear properly when making phone calls. I just had to get that off my chest :joy:

I remember days when it was not even an option to have a phone call in public transport.

It’s an expensive hobby, but getting myself a vinyl record player a few years ago was one of the best things I ever did! :grinning:

I have fond memories of that time, but now it seems like it was another life. I wish people would show more respect and consideration for others again. I like to think of a saying I once read: “One person’s freedom ends where another’s begins.”

I feel the same way. I’ve had mine for about six years now, and it’s become a wonderful and mindful hobby. I love searching for rare items in record stores, cleaning newly acquired records, and putting them in new inner sleeves. Then playing them for the first time and really enjoying the music. I had a nice phono preamplifier built by an engineer and experimented a lot with different needles and cartridges. I have now found a setup that I am happy with and I really enjoy picking out a record after a stressful day, taking it out of its sleeve, putting it on, putting on my Beyerdynamic headphones, sitting down in my armchair and really enjoying the music.

And you can’t compare any of this to listening to music on your smartphone speakers!

Completely agree. It’s so much more than listening to the music. It’s the artwork, the feel of it, being made to commit to the album as the artist wanted you to with no skipping of tracks. It’s an investment in so many ways.
