Apps that Disconnect Us from Others

Some smartphone apps, such as these, enrich our lives without dehumanizing us (by disconnecting us from others):

  • Navigation apps
  • Weather apps

But, other smartphone apps dehumanize us without enriching our lives.

Example #1: When ride-sharing services replace taxi services:

  • You use an app instead of speaking with a dispatcher.
  • You get a random driver instead of a possibly familiar driver.

Example #2: When online shops replace brick-and-mortar shops:

  • You use an app or browser instead of speaking with a cashier.
  • You get a random delivery-person instead of seeing a familiar one.

Example #3: When online insurance sales replace insurance agents:

  • You use an app or browser instead of speaking with an insurance agent.
  • You call a random customer-care agent instead of calling your insurance agent.

What would you add to these three examples?

@kirkmahoneyphd good list. I agree with most of it.

I would like to add that in many countries, where I have traveled, ridesharing apps like Uber, Bolt, Lyft are actually used by taxi companies because Uber has restrictions. You can use the app, but a licensed taxi will arrive with all the markings. For example, in Athens, where the language could be an issue (both written & spoken) it helps to use the app so the driver knows where to take you.

I would add social media apps to your list. Social media apps give the illusion of connection, but in reality make you more disconnected & lonely.

I would also add the auto-checkout machines and apps.
