App defaults management is inaccessible in MuditaOS K

Hi - I’m using the Mudita Kompakt with a few sideloaded applications to make everyday use a bit more feasible. However, I’ve encountered an issue whereby I’ve opened a file (in android’s native Files app) and clicked on ‘always open with‘ checkbox in the “Open with” prompt, and now have no way to change the default. It appears that Mudita OS has completely overridden the default application settings “App Info” and “Default Applications” setting pages where the setting to clear such defaults usually resides.

On stock Android, users can clear “always open with” app defaults via Settings > Apps > [App] > Open by default > Clear defaults.

On MuditaOS K this is inaccessible because:

  1. The Settings UI does not expose the standard Android App Info screen, or a way to change default behaviours (even through Manage Apps > Default Apps)

  2. The app info screens reachable via Settings > Manage Apps only shows OPEN and FORCE STOP

I’ve tried a bunch of FOSS apps like App Manager, Activity Manager, clearing defaults using adb command, with no luck at all.

What is the recommended method for resetting app defaults? And secondly, will these settings be reinstated in an OS update (I imagine this will become more of a widespread issue as community apps are used more in addition to the built-in Mudita ones)?

@fastmango welcome to the community, I think you have really hit on a good point for adopting core android functions.

I was never an android user but what you are suggesting makes sense to have default settings for those with preferred sideloaded apps.

@smuch I’m in the same boat having switched from iOS.

My take on this (as a new Kompakt owner) is that Mudita should consider how the simplification of their OS vs native Android ties in with apk side-loading support. Whilst I’m on board with the idea of simplifying the UI as much as possible (this is why I purchased the phone after all), there should be an escape hatch allowing navigation to core Android settings to ensure that the exact scenario above doesn’t happen. At minimum, exposing more settings under the App Info screen is necessary, now that side-loading is possible through Mudita Center.

Hopefully somebody at Mudita can chime in.

@fastmango If you uninstall and reinstall the app that you want to open the file with (or really install any other app that can open the file), it should re-prompt you with the “Open with” dialog. Just don’t click “Always open with.”

I’ll ask our team to expand on this ideas, however, if my memory serves me right, we talked about something in a similar vein last summer, shortly after Kompakt launched. If you look at the minimalist phone space, Mudita Kompakt occupies a very unique spot as a “flexible minimalist phone.”
