Anyone try ordering an Uber on a sideloaded web browser?

This action would be the most maximalist thing I’d need to do on this device. As someone who travels for work and relies on rideshare apps, I’m just curious if anyone has been able to successfully order a ride? I believe no apps will work sideloaded (due to the degoogled nature) but in theory this should be possible in a browser.

All good if not, I’d just need to swap sims with my Samsung when traveling for work.

I haven’t tried, but someone mentioned there is an option to order Uber via text. Maybe worth looking into if it’s an important service for you.

I didn’t book a trip but I am quite confident it does work via a browser.
I tried installing the Uber app and got an error message saying it requires google services (as expected). It wouldn’t display the map after that point.

I then tried by navigating to https://m.uber.com in the Brave browser (you can login with your phone number and sms verification code) and am able to see the map, cars locations. I can prepare itinerary, choose cars, etc. I just haven’t click the ‘request’ button.

My understanding is apps do require google services but that doesn’t apply once you are in a web browser as it is just a ‘display’ tool.

It’s a little small on screen but perfectly adequate if you only need to book a ride occasionaly .

This is amazing to see! Exactly what I was hoping for.

Tangent here, but is brave fast enough on the kompakt? I’m unsure which one to load once I get the device, leaning between firefox / brave, or something more stripped back like Eink bro or Smart Cookie Browser

Brave works, perfectly for me. It’s obviously a little less convenient than standard smartphones (which for most in this forum is a positive!), but when you actually need it, it works just as fast in my experience. One thing that improves speed is to install a different keyboard. I am using g-board, no one loves google but it just works much faster than the Kompakt keyboard.

Lyft looks like it’s no longer available on the web according to their website. Uber looks like it will work if you request their desktop site as the mobile site returns and “unsupported screen size” error. It’s definitely not something you’d want to use in a regular basis but, as renaudib mentions above, it’s acceptable in a punch. If anyone has come up with a better solution please let me/us know!

Brave and Firefox are both perfectly suitable options and both run as fast as you’d expect on the phone. I made sure to install e-ink extensions for both browsers. Eink Bro also works really well on the MK. I haven’t tried Smart Cookie Browser and I’m not very familiar with it but I can’t think of a reason that any browser would have issues.

@bone_naga might you be able to share specific steps on how you were able to access the chrome webstore on Brave Browser? I’m getting a message that it’s only available for desktops…

Sorry, going back in I can’t figure it out. Either I’m wrong and I only did it on Firefox or something may have changed since I originally did it.

I have done it several times with einkbro browser. Just make sure and turn off the SSL warnings as they are annoying. Location works as well, just make sure it is picking you up where you actually are.

In the city, using m.uber.com works for me BUT you have to have the exact address, you can’t depend on the GPS.

I have not ordered a ride yet, but despite the Google services error it allows me to type the exact address and seems like it will let me request a ride . I’ll update this weekend if it works!

@mgayden It worked for me, but you gotta be super specific with the address. I think it works best in cities.

works fine for me as well. I’m using einkbro and “most” of the time it can figure out and address. I have never tried it without being in a city.
