We’ve Released MuditaOS K 1.4.0! Let’s Talk!

Bug report:

Pre-requisite:
Enable a custom loader.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Tap on the control centre button (button right on the handset)
  2. Tap the gear icon for Settings.
  3. Tap on ‘App Layout’

Expected result:
Display some options to arrange apps to suit.

Actual Result:
Settings App stopped working. Close app. (overlay).

This is reproducible for me. I would be grateful if others could try to reproduce this error to rule out any issues unique to my phone.

Many thanks.

This release is promising, but I’m left scratching my chin over the following. Perhaps someone can help me.

  1. “New Default Apps setting allows you to choose the applications you want to use for key tasks, like messaging and phone calls, whenever you have compatible external apps installed.” > Where does one find this? I can’t find this on the phone. I’ve also checked the Mudita Center desktop app, but nothing there either.

  2. Music Player Widget:
“Now you can also control your music directly from the lock screen — You can play, pause, skip to the next or previous track.” Well, I can’t. When I play a track and lock the screen, I simply see a bare screen and the padlock.

@urszula next to each new feature introduction mentioned in the release notes, it’d be useful to have a one-liner on where to find it/enable it/how to use it.

Thank you.

  1. Default apps is under “Manage apps”, right at the top. However, some default app settings are missing, see my post above.
  2. As for the music player widget, you have to press the power button to get to that.

Excited to hopefully get the update on my device soon!

This would obviously require another system update to implement but I think it would be worth considering providing a way to skip the rollout phase like other manufacturers do and get the update instantly if you go looking for it. OEMs typically rollout in phases such as what Mudita is doing but most have a functionality where if you press check for updates manually, it sidesteps the rollout and will check for the latest version faster. I would argue that this is still safe because if someone is digging in system settings and checking for updates on their own volition, they will likely have the tech knowledge to be able to give you feedback or report issues during the rollout phase which is what you want so that you could halt the rollout and make a fix. Most users aren’t paying attention to updates that closely and spamming the update check button like the vocal minority in this forum is so they would still be fine and follow the regular rollout.

Either that or making a beta program that people could opt into to get a release early and provide feedback on.

My device has not received the 1.4.0 update yet, but I have noticed a problem since the 1.4.0 update was announced.

I had been receiving group chats just fine, but suddenly the group chats no longer appear on my phone. I still get a notification that I have unread texts, but the group text chain has completely disappeared. So not only has it retroactively disappeared old group threads, I’m still receiving the unread text counter on my lock screen and attached to the messaging app, and have no way to remove these counters because I cannot see the messages that are triggering them. Will this be fixed when the 1.4.0 update is pushed through to my device?

@xyz, I see that you’ve noted that some apps are missing from the default apps section. Do you play poker? I see your issue and raise you: For me, under the ‘Manage Apps’ section, ‘default apps’ is missing altogether. (See screenshots.)

As for needing to tap the power button to see the now playing music widget, I gather that it isn’t shown when using a custom launcher like inkOS, which I use. One mystery solved, at least.

First of all your settings page looks weird: this grey bar with a dropdown menu - it’s not a part of Mudita software - I thought that those parts of system cannot change even with sideloaded apps.
As for Music widget - InkOS has no access to lock screen. You have to press the button without unlocking the phone to see the widget. Are you using fingerprint?
If yes, change unlocking mode in settings (safety > manage fingerprints) into two step option: press and touch.
If that’s not your issue - I’m out of ideas

This issue has been an ongoing one that has been posted about elsewhere in these forums. I had the exact same issue when I first got my Kompakt. It doesn’t make any sense, but the problem only occurs if you have any phone numbers blocked at all—even if those numbers have nothing to do with any of your group texts. As soon as you unblock all blocked phone numbers, your group texts will reappear. It’s an extremely unfortunate bug that renders number blocking completely useless.

Aha. The plot thickens. I should say that the grey colour only appears in this screenshot, not on the e-ink display. But @ume_1138, are you saying that you don’t have this drop-down at all? Have I boobed somehow?

Here are the apps I’ve sideloaded:

Aurora Store, Batch Uninstaller, Bura, Calculator, Calendar, CalmCast, Claude, Clock, DAVx5, CalmDirectory, F-Droid, File-Manager, Focal & Naim, Foobar2000, Futo Keyboard, Futo Voice Input, Gallery, Here WeGo, Hue, InkOS, Kazoo, LocalSend, Molly, Musicolet, NHS App, Obsidian, Open Camera, Pocket Casts, QR Scanner, SuperLive Plus, Syncthing-Fork.

The only one from that list that might possibly seek to arrange the list of apps is ‘Batch Uninstaller’, but that’s speculation.

Some light grey shades are displayed as white on e-ink, but the whole bar with dropdown for sure is not stock - different layout, font etc. Also on your screenshot this bar hides the top options and arrow on top of page indicator (or scroll bar - whatever it’s called). Can you see it? First item should be Default apps, second Alarm - maybe it overlays top item on the list?

How about fingerprint setting/button press - widget issue?

@YYZ I have passed this on to the team & I’m waiting for their response.

works fine on my phone.

Just got the update! Is there any plan to have the music player overlay on lock and home screen work for all audio coming out of the device (sideloaded apps)?

I don’t think most people are loading on their own Mp3s and are missing out on this awesome feature

@mrmaple are you referring to the ‘App Layout’ crash bug report I posted earlier in this thread?

Thanks.

Thanks for the update.
This makes the music app more usable, but I still do have a complaint.

Like @marko noted, the songs are not in the correct order.
I have my filenames numbered, like so:

01 First Song.mp3
02 Second Song.mp3

But they are not in the correct order because the Kompakt will read the ID3-tags for the song names, but not for their track order. I would like to either have track number ID3-tags included, or just to have no ID3-tags at all.

@urszula can you pass this on to the team to be fixed in a next update?
Also I’m really happy with the controls on the lock screen. Also send my compliments to the team please.

Heliboard has a key that allows you to switch between keyboard. I know it because I’ve used Heliboard specifically to do that but I can’t remember what it was.

Then, you need to start the Heliboard app to switch to heliboard again. This can be done without any android setting.

At worst, you simply install another android keyboard: it will open the “choose your keyboard dialog” on first run.

After a couple of days with 1.4, not using the music app nor group messages, I can say that the only difference I see is a vastly improved fingerprint scanner.

Unlocking my phone required 2 or 3 attempts each time. Now, it works 9 time out of 10 (as long as my fingers are not wet).

So, congratulation!

@urszula I am getting a file type not supported in group texts where I assume screenshots or images are being sent. Could be some other file i guess but I doubt it.
