@fanniebeaulieu There is a voice recorder- for personal voice notes, which are saved on the phone. I use WhatsApp to send voice notes.
Also here asking for this voice message capability. It is such a time saver to record a message and send, or listen to a message. I just ordered my MK thinking it had the voice messaging option but as I’m reading this forum, found it does not. Hesitant to return my order and try a different minimal phone. Would there be an update with this capability any time soon?
Sideload a different SMS app and you can send voice messages just fine. InkMessage is optimized for the Kompakt and works great.
This is the first I’ve heard of this. Thank you so much! Will try it out ![]()
What about Signal?
I don’t have contacts using Signal to contact me but if I did I would use a different device (iPhone). Texting with SMS with the Kompakt is good enough for my foreseeable needs.
Do you know a specific site or store for InkMessage? I have not been able to find it. The one I thought I downloaded in apk form doesn’t show up on the phone.
I don’t use audio messages, but I did experiment with sending one using InkMessages to an iPhone. The iPhone received it as an unknown file. Have not tried Android to Android.
If someone has time for a voice message they have time for a quick call to clarify a point.
Does no one use a phone to have an actual conversation any more? …. No wonder people are loosing social skills these days ![]()

I think that is true in some cases. Consider attaching an audio message instead of sending a text can communicate better with some languages and there are many other reasons for attaching audio.
Why send a picture when you can visit?
I fail to see how sending a voice message is any different or any better or at communicating, in any language. both are detached from human interaction.
All that says is “you are not worthy of any of my time”. I rarely receive them, but when I do I don’t appreciate getting one.
I have to say I agree with you.
I don’t see how sending a quick voice message is any different than sending a text message - the whole point is I want to tell you something quick but I don’t want to have to play phone tag with you to give a 5 second message, and it is easier and clearer to communicate information over voice.
The difference is you at least have to put in a little effort, to compile a text, a voice message requires nothing, just a single press of a button.
You do realise that anything that can be conveyed by voice message can be written in text format. If you can’t be bothered to devote 5 whole minutes to writing your message why bother at all.
Voice is a richer medium, and lots of people use text to speech keyboards anyway so the effort is the same.
I do not see any reason to moralize about voice messaging. @ArmchairSetup person has a valid use case. In my opinion, voice messaging helps the device get out of my way, which is very much in line with the MK design philosophy. I personally depend on this feature in Signal to communicate with a specific colleague with motor impairment. He can type, and he often does, but it is significantly easier to simply accommodate him.
For those of us who need to work on other folks whim, we don’t have the luxury of taking time when ever we want for a phone call. That may be your life and to be honest I would envy you.
Let’s focus on the the utility of the tool within the design philosophy scope, ask good-faith questions, and drop the condescending tone.
If it was in line with Mudita design philosophy surely it would have been included in the stock features
Pretty sure your friend would prefer a phone call to a voice or text message given his condition
No one HAS to work on the whim of others, if you choose to do so, that is your choice.
You must be an extremely busy and important person if making a phone call is a luxury . One may wonder why you would buy a minimal basic phone like the Kompakt which add precious seconds to every task, in the first place.
Your post is rather condescending actually, this is just another winging thread asking for another unnecessary legacy smartphone feature.
Maybe if this forum wasn’t choc full of pointless requests, the developers could actually spend time on improving the existing functionality .
I appreciate your post, and I agree with many of your points! I don’t think sundancermartin is engaging in good faith so I’m going to ignore their reply, but I do agree feature creep on a minimalist phone should be avoided. Some of us may have our lives paid for and live with an abundance of free time, and that’s ok! Unfortunately, for the rest of us, compromise is an important life skill. Voice notes may not be for everyone, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to imagine that a phone with a built in recorder app would have some way to share those recordings with others. The Kompakt is not here to get in your way, it’s here to strip the idea of a phone down to its essentials so you spend less time distracted. Those five minutes you spend writing a text could be better spent in the company of those around you, and to me that’s what minimalism means.
