I purchased my Kompakt primarily to get off involuntary big tech use. And it is a great comfort that the Kompakt is a de-googled phone. Also, the e-ink screen is definitely a positive, as I’m reading again every day (with sideloaded Lx Reader app, because the onboard Reader app only displays text in faded grey on my phone for some reason). I also enjoy music on the phone with VLC Player and Bandcamp (good music support was a non-negotiable before purchase).
But, surprisingly, the feature I now enjoy most is the ‘kill’ switch on the left side of the phone (Offline+). I have to admit that I am now using this great thing ALL THE TIME. My friend messaged me asking ‘are you ok, my calls have been going to voicemail’ and I had to ring him back and say ‘I’m GREAT. I’ve got a new phone and it has this offline feature which I LOVE USING’. I almost wanted to say sorry for being ‘rude’ but why? I’m actually unapologetic because I like having private time offline. It’s hard for many people to understand that these days.
I can seriously feel my muscles releasing tension every time I flip the switch, especially at night. I think EVERY phone should have this (but then again, that would be against the interests of big tech and their sneaky ways right?).
@peacefulshadows Thank you so much for writing this. I, personally, absolutely love reading this (I’m gonna pass this on to our team as well!) It’s so inspiring to hear how Offline+ has become such a core part of your daily life (and your nighttime wind-down). That feeling of tension melting away when you flip the switch is exactly why we created it, to make it easier to reclaim those pockets of quiet, private time without guilt.
And you’re completely right, in a world where constant connectivity is the default, choosing to be deliberately unreachable can feel like an act of rebellion… but it’s also an act of self-care.
We’re so glad your Mudita Kompakt is helping you read more, enjoy your music, and fully unplug when you want to.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It’s a reminder that sometimes the simplest features can have the biggest impact.
I do agree the Offline Switch is probably the best feature of this phone, after the Compact size of the device which in my opinion is perfect and phones shouldn’t be taller than this.
It is used every night before sleep! Other than keeping me quiet, it also preserves battery life.
Used to have Oneplus phones 7-10 years ago and they had a 3level switcher to change from normal to silent to do not disturb, it was amazing. Apple had their 1 level switch that was still useful. Neither of them have these switches anymore. Nothing compares to the hardware feeling of turning off communications with a switch.
The size of the device (love that it is small), e-ink screen (I had to experience it in real life to fully understand the importance of it) and as you write, the offline+ switch (few things winds me down as much as flipping that switch).
100% agree on the Offline+ switch. That needs to be standard on any Mudita phone moving forward. Turning it off as one falls asleep is “absolute cinema” as my youngest likes to say.
Fully agreed. I love that simple little switch even though it is really sad that nowadays we have to rely on something like this and have to explain to people afterwards why we’re using it. Anyways the moment I switch to Offline+ I instantly feel relieved. It really is a great feature of the Kompakt.
