Text Message Encryption?

Does anyone know if the Kompakt is able to send text messages with RCS encryption? On Android, I would see an indicator at the bottom of the screen if the texts were encrypted but I see no such indicator on the Kompakt.

Not possible without side loading.

RCS is not possible even with sideloading right now. RCS works using Google Messages but that requires Google Play Services.

@bone_naga Currently, Kompakt supports standard SMS/MMS messaging, RCS is not available right now, but our team is aware that people have asked about this.
Like others have mentioned, if someone sideloads an app such as Signal or WhatsApp, it has encryption.

Sorry you’re right. I just noticed the part about encryption and was thinking of Signal or WhatsApp, but correct not RCS.

Although the team is already aware, just wanted to add my vote for RCS. Quite a few of my contacts don’t communicate with anything but text.

To offer RCS there is a large infrastructure needed. That is why only big player offer it. Someone explained it in a video about the sidephone.
So no way Mudita will ever offer RCS without integration google services

Hmm, that’s unfortunate. I definitely don’t want Google in there, so I guess I need to work harder to get people on Signal.

Is it RCS that important? I’m all for it, but what is the actual risk of something bad happening here?

Thanks for the response. I’ve sideloaded Signal but the average person just uses text so having RCS added would be a huge improvement.

Yes it is that important. Every measure that you can take to protect your information matters. That’s why I didn’t want a phone riddled with Google tracking software. Right now in some countries, the threats range from random people trying to steal your data all the way up to the government itself.

The security of RCS is also the headline feature for me but how you sell it to people that are less concerned is it also comes with a lot of quality of life features like actually knowing if the message got delivered and keeping messages in the correct order if you’re in a group text and go without signal for a bit (something that should probably be a feature on a phone that makes it easy to kill your signal at the flip of a switch).

There is not way you can escape Google if you want RCS in Android, is the only way currently.

If you have another android phone with Play Services and you have Googles Messages app with RCS support, you can connect that account to Beeper.

Then install Beeper into Mudita Kompakt and you’d be able to use RCS through Beeper as a forwarder for Google Messages.

Though Beeper breaks the e2ee and then encrypts it again, so it’s not continuous.

I’ve tried sideloading facebook messenger but get No notifications come through so its worthless

Yeah the lack of notifications for sideloaded apps is very frustrating. It actually makes you waste time on the phone checking apps unnecessarily, which is counter to the purpose of the phone. But at the same time, there’s no way I’m buying a privacy-focused phone and not having some sort of encrypted messaging on there.

Stop worrying about new messages so much?

@jalucky13 I’m sorry about this. I know it must be challenging. I will pass this on to the team.

There is nothing mudita can to. Many apps rely on google messages services to deliver stuff and notify you.
As mudita has no google services no way you get the information. Same for beeper for example. I wrote a message to them and they answered that there is no priority in this.

Signal on the other hand uses another way and don’t rely on google messages services thats why you get notified.

I would like to second more types of encrypted communication! I would love to see a Beeper app for Mudita that could support RCS/SMS!

“Don’t worry about it” doesn’t really cut it. I come to this forum because most of the people here will help find solutions, even if it’s imperfect like sideloading signal or attempting a workaround with beeper.

Your solution might work for you. If it worked for me, I wouldn’t still be looking for a solution. We all want different things out of this phone. I don’t want a device where I might miss an emergency or time-sensitive message.
