(Tentative) Request: Signal Client With Official Support

I’m aware this is very unlikely to happen, but I wondered what it would take for the Kompakt to get an official Signal (or other wifi messaging service) client?

Obviously, you can sideload the Signal app, but it is an imperfect solution because it lacks lock-screen notifications and it isn’t particularly well-suited to the e-ink display.

Wifi messaging services are just superior for anyone concerned with privacy, sending photos or voice notes, or participating in group calls.

I’m just curious, especially since the Light Phone is getting something akin to this later in the year.

Thanks for your time.

I’d also like to see this. People I know are increasingly moving to signal for privacy and safety, and not only that, having an officially supported messaging system beyond sms would help solve the current issues with receiving messages

Yes same here. Signal is my only must-have sideloaded app, and the fact that the Kompakt runs Signal in the first place is the reason why I bought it. If you haven’t done so yet you can make font size bigger in settings and also change the background to white and make text bubbles darker. Helps a bit, but yes I would love an adapted experience one day!

Can anyone elucidate why this is so hard to do? Do you need permission from Signal themselves? Is that how Light are managing to do it?

Permission is not needed, likely you would take an existing signal client (either the official one or molly) and re-skin it with the mudita mindful design library - someone in the community could do that. Lock screen notifications are harder, since I believe that involves access to protected parts of the OS (or you could use the katapult launcher’s implementation).

Thank you to everyone who suggested this. However, this is not entirely up to us. Signal has to agree to this as well, because we would not be able to just create a Signal app on our own & expect Signal to support it. Unfortunately, Signal would have to be on board.
