SMS App won't open

Around 20-30 minutes ago my SMS app crashed, gave me the error message “SMS app stopped working” and will not open again. If i click on the icon it is either unresponsive or gives me the same error message again. I have forced the app to stop and reopened it multiple times through settings, restarted my phone twice, turned it on and off Offline+ mode. I don’t know what happened or how to fix this.

I’m currently on a train, which means that it’s possible the spotty on-and-off cell signal is part of the cause of this problem. But it also means that I need access to the SMS app to coordinate with people when I arrive in the next few hours!

update: I received a text message from someone and this seemed to allow the app to open again. The problem seems to be resolved, though it was still spooky.

I’ve asked our team for some feedback on what caused this.
Do you have any sideloaded apps? Which ones?

Hi yes I did. At the time I had sideloaded:
AirVisual, Aranet Home, Aurora Store, Big Finish, Brave, HERE WeGo, Letterboxd, Pocket Casts, Signal, Simple ABP Free, TIDAL, Uber Eats.

It’s a new phone so i’m still experimenting with which apps I need and which ones I don’t.

I’m going to ask the team if any of these apps can, potentially, interfere with the SMS app.
I’m not familiar with the some of them.
