Sideloading Apps on Mudita Kompakt: What You Need to Know

@jalucky13 It’s not too complicated. You have to connect your Mudita Kompakt to the computer & do it that way. The initial set-up takes a bit of effort, but it’s pretty easy. I’m not super technical & I was able to get it done.

Hi Urszula! I’ve seen some posts in this forum about how to sideload but I havn’t seen any clear answers to it. Is it like cupheadfan69 asks a few posts up (“Would sideloading something like signal be as simple as loading the apk file into the file manager and selecting it like you would do on any other phone?”) or do you need to install extra software (other than Mudita Center) to sideload, eg. Signal? Thank you!

@denguefeber Currently, the easiest way to do it is by using ADB (Android Debugging Bridge)- But don’t let the name scare you. The setup takes some steps, but then it’s just smooth sailing. I am not a techie & I was able to sideload apps without any issues.

What Do You Need to Use ADB?

  1. A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
  2. A USB cable to connect your Mudita Kompakt
  3. ADB installed on your computer (it’s part of the Android SDK tools)
  4. Developer Options and USB Debugging enabled on your phone
  5. The APK file (this is the Android app package you want to install)

I’m sure that there will be a plethora of YouTube instructional videos, so no worries.

@denguefeber Here’s one of those videos :slight_smile:

Thanks for the answer! Okey! Then I will wait for some more instruction-videos. Thank you! The thing that “scares” me is that I have a old mac and the ADB i know workds for Mac i Brew and my OS is too old for that ADB to work.
Do someone know any other ADB-client that works with (older) MacOS?

Quick question. If I don’t sideload an App Store like aurora will the apps be updated by themselves? If I just side loaded a single app like Libby how would it get updates? Thanks for the help!

I believe that the answer is that the apps will not be updated by themselves. I use APKpure on a deGoogled Pixel 6, and it reminds me when updates are available.

@kirkmahoneyphd oh I gotcha! That makes sense.

This is the correct answer. However, I downloaded Whatsapp & Signal directly from the respective websites for those apps, so directly from the source. But APKpure is a good resource. I found the Simple Audiobook Player there & I will give that a go

In case of Signal. How does it work when there is a new update released? Do you have to uninstall the apk on the Mudita and reinstall the updatet apk file? or just re-install and overwrite? how often, if, have you updated Signal since you use your Kompakt? Do you still receive messages if you haven’t updatet it?

@s_micn There has been no update since I installed Signal on my Mudita Kompakt. But I would expect to be notified & then I would have to install the new version.
Someone on the forum (I think it was @Jose_Briones ) suggested downloading the Aurora app store to just update the app seamlessly, without having to go through the whole process of uploading another version.

I am using Telegram downloaded from the website, not the store, and it tells me when to upgrade; not sure if it’s proprietary service or Google services but I presume the former, since the whole outside-the-store .apk is about not having to comply with Google.
What I’m still wondering, is Revolut. I know apk mirrors are potentially not trustworthy, but I just stumbled upon apk “rippers”, maybe this is the way, derive the apk oneself?

Has anyone tried a gcam? I wonder if the camera performance can be a bit better with that, I don’t wish for any wonders and LP3 level is sufficient.

@buiosu I am also a Revolut user since I travel a lot. Honestly, I’m not sure I would download any financial app from an APK side. I gotta see what the options are at this point

Has anyone tried Babbel? It doesn’t have a score on Plexus
