Privacy on mudita kompakt?

Yes, I run a stock Kompakt phone out of the box, that’s fine with Mudita that I am that type of user. I agree it’s not everyone’s use case.

I don’t care what the OS is as long as it works, other than knowing its MuditaOS, based on a stripped down Android OS, but Mudita’s approach makes sense to me, its better/easier to start with proven technology, no point in reinventing the wheel.

I am not having to deal with DNS and VPN on the Kompakt. I never used android based mobile products, they are not my forte. I am so unfamiliar that I have to look up some things like AOSP, this is new terminology to me.

I don’t like the dangers that come with having apps developed in the wild but if they are its fine with me if they are competently developed and adhere to whatever standards are standard, best if they are peer reviewed and supported. Kompakt sideloading isn’t a problem, to me its a unique option, it’s a good feature, perhaps it’s common for people familiar with Androids?

You can say all you want that Mudita should just focus on the out-of-box experience, but that point is moot because that’s not what they’re doing. They’re actively encouraging sideloading and third-party development,

I’m not really surprised that the DNS and VPN settings were removed by Mudita, as it’s a device that is marketed without a web browser.

however I do agree, users now are encouraged to load whatever app they wish to the device. It seems originally the intent was to”this is a minimal device. But we won’t stop you from adding important app if you want to” and it’s now “tell us what your favourite app to add to the Kompakt is, & by the way show us what you built for it”

My only worry is that every day there seems to be a new request from someone, often they erode the privacy focus of the device which is my main reason for buying it

I would rather Mudita say we only support the core functionality of the Kompakt and side loading is at the users risk or we will accommodate whatever we can within the confines of AOSP. At the moment it’s not very clear

I have not been encouraged to load apps on the kompakt.

Its interesting in how other people use their devices.

Mudita are intentionally promoting sideloading of apps. a recent post asking users to list their top 3 apps to sideload & the mindful design app directory, an environment designed and promoted to create apps just to do that, illustrate this.

Just because you say you havent been encouraged to do it, doesnt mean its not happening.

But asking users isn’t encouraging users? A different understanding of what is essential vs what is necessary, its okay to ask and okay to encourage. I am asking for the Mudita logo on the home screen, I may try to encourage Mudita to add the logo.

The logo was removed because others wanted to have it removed, just like you want it to be back now. It’s an eternal back and forth about a feature that has no function.

The logo is still on the logon screen, but not on the lock screen. However, if you want it on the home screen, you can use Katapult launcher and one of my wallpapers, because I also made a wallpaper with the Mudita logo, just for the home screen. The download is at the end of this thread:

Thanks, I didn’t know the logo is on the lock screen. what logon screen? I turned off the screen lock in settings as it’s unnecessarily annoying to lock and unlock this mindful phone. Now when I long press the side button, the for options pop up, and pressing “screen lock” does nothing. What I call the lock screen is really just the sleep screen with a lock icon?

Dude, just READ :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s NOT on the lock screen. It only shows up for a while when you turn on the phone. It was removed from the lock screen, which you won’t see anyway :stuck_out_tongue:

So for the home screen, use the wallpaper.

Yes.

I do see the logo when I “powered off” the phone, and powering it on the logo briefly displays whilst it boots. but in standby mode or sleep, whatever its called, all i have is a blank page with a little padlock and an arrow pointing to the side. This page is missing the logo. Why isn’t the logo on the stand by screen? It doesn’t matter?

Because, like I said before, several people wanted to have it removed, so Mudita removed it.

Okay then, no logo, I am not alone, several people want this phone to do other things that it doesn’t do.

Yeah, and this thread is about privacy anyway

New ability to turn off sentry is an option in MuditaOS 1.5.0

They were asking users to recommend their top 3 apps to sideload, that is indeed encouraging users, anyone who thinks logically and rationally, can see this.

Im guessing you sit up at night thinking up ridiculous comments to post here,

I don’t recall if I replied to that question.

I’m benefiting from learning what capabilities the Kompakt has and what it’s lacking.

It’s cool that we have an active user community.

+1 for adding ability to use custom DNS, DNS over HTTPS; +1 for ability to stop regular pings/calling home, even with the minimum of information.

(Note that IP address is usually obtainable by the receiving server even if it is not part of the data sent, it is up to the receiver to not store it.)

Also, would appreciate option to check for updates only when explicitly asked, not automatically.

Pie in the sky wish: ability to deny internet access to any app.

Thanks developers, we look to you to help make the Kompakt a frontline privacy-conscious device.

Denying the internet permission is possible out of the box on custom ROMs like grapheneos, however you can also download netguard (you will need aurora store) which allows blocking internet access to specified apps.

Thank you!

+1 for an always on VPN option please. I use a VOIP SMS service so internet access is required and having the always on VPN would give me peace of mind instead of having to double check that the VPN is still running.
