I would like to have my Kompakt in dark mode across all apps, I’m running inkos and the launcher is in dark mode, is there a way to have apps run in dark mode also, in particular Mudita phone and sms apps and signal

Thanks for brining this up. We have this planned, but I’m not sure exactly when it will be implemented and if it will be system-wide, since you mentioned you use InkOS. I will ask our team to clarify this for me & I will get back to you when they respond.

I have been able to implement dark mode in signal , by following kind advice from Gezimos on this forum. I couldn’t use dark mode on a the stock apps without it changing my Inkos Home Screen back to light mode for some reason, I suspect it’s a setting I have incorrect . Thanks for getting back to me regarding this though it is good news

Because like I said Mudita apps don’t have Dark mode, the workaround I showed you is to invert the colors. It’s not a real dark mode, it just inverts color. So it makes white background → black and black text to white.

And if you have inkOS in dark mode, it will invert it back to light mode.

Sorry I should have said, I used the invert colour option, by clicking the shortcut button, I have dark mode enabled on InkOS, but when I invert colours of the stock apps, the main InkOS screen goes back to light mode

That’s what i’m trying to say.

If you have inkOS in dark mode, and then you use the invert colors you’re inverting inkOS color you’re not activating inkOS light mode. If your colors would be red and yellow you’d be inverting those, not changing it to dark mode.

dark mode ≠ invert colors

Dark theme is a separate option in Developer Options, but the Mudita OS settings or Mudita Apps are not styled to utilize this mode at all.

Wouldn’t a dark mode create a lot of ghosting throughout the UI? Or would it work differently?

it does create a lot of ghosting with the default E-ink modes. With the hidden e-ink mode like Reading mode, it flashes the screen to clear the ghosting. (work like Kindle basically when you switch pages).
But the default e-ink mode drivers could be tweaked to reduce ghosting in Dark mode.

My launcher (inkOS) has a few features to overcome the ghosting:

  • auto refresh on home button
  • manual refresh on double tap
  • access to the hidden e-ink modes like clear, contrast (high gamma), and reading mode.
