Offline mode question

Is offline mode 100% offline in MuditaOS, on the Pure phone? Does it still connect at all and/or ping the cell network/towers?

I have read that even when phones are in Airplane Mode and/or powered off they can still maybe connect/communicate/ping with the cell network. Speaking mainly about the iPhone here.

@b_9 Thanks for your question. In Mudita Pure the OFFLINE mode turns off the modem. Itā€™s not like airplane mode. Bluetooth can still work in OFFLINE MODE.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Is the modem the part/chip that communicates with the cell tower/network? Is it the same thing as the baseband processor, which I have heard communicates with the cell tower/network and can maybe still do that when a phone is in Airplane Mode or even when it is off?
And if the modem is off is there absolutely zero communication with the cell tower/network/internet?

@b_9 A baseband processor and a modem are both critical components in communication systems, particularly in mobile devices. While they are related, they serve distinct functions.

  • The baseband processor handles all the signal processing tasks related to communication. This includes encoding, decoding, modulation, demodulation, and error correction of data.
  • It processes the digital signals that are received and transmitted by the deviceā€™s radio.
  • The modem (modulator-demodulator) converts digital data into an analog signal for transmission over airwaves or wired connections and vice versa.
  • It modulates the baseband signal onto a carrier frequency for transmission and demodulates the received carrier signal back to baseband for processing.

So, if the modem is turned off, the baseband processorā€™s ability to function is significantly limited because the baseband processor relies on the modem to perform the modulation and demodulation of signals for communication. If the modem is off, the baseband processor cannot send or receive any signals over the air or wired medium. This means no cellular calls, SMS, or data connectivity can occur.

The baseband processor might still be able to perform some internal processing tasks, such as handling protocol stacks or maintaining the state of the communication software. However, without the ability to transmit or receive data, these tasks have limited practical utility.

However, other device functionalities that do not rely on the modem might still work. For example, Wi-Fi( this does not apply in the case of PURE- because it doesnā€™t have this feature), Bluetooth, and local applications can function normally, assuming their respective modules are active. However, anything requiring cellular connectivity would be unavailable.

Hopefully this answered your question.

Thanks so much for such a detailed and thorough answer!
That totally answers my question.
Will the Kompakt have the same offline mode?

@b_9 No problem  Iā€™m glad I was able to explain it clearly. As for the features of Mudita Kompakt, I canā€™t officially confirm those yet  but we will be releasing more info soon.

So essentialy, SIM signal is down (as well as tethering if used) and you are down to notes, mp3 and meditation  - quick ā€œdo not disturbā€ mode that prevents call and SMS?

@RasVoja The ā€˜DO NOT DISTURBā€™ feature is actually quite interesting. It letā€™s you decide who, if anyone can disturb you

Oh its good for dumbphone advanced.
I.lke A bit that it has dedicated key, not only software setting.
