I would love to see a Kompakt phone support GrapheneOS, however I don’t think it’s realistic to expect that of the team at Mudita. There’s a reason only major OEMs can build compatible devices. It requires expensive security hardware (CPU with MTE support, fully featured secure element) and complete monthly android security bulletin patches among many other things. For a budget-friendly e-ink phone from a small company, it just doesn’t make sense.
Fair point on the hardware/patching barrier, but we’re conflating official certification with architectural compatibility.
Mudita doesn’t need to be an official GrapheneOS OEM to capture the security benefits. They can’t ship the official build (that requires upstream integration and signing keys), but they can ship a GrapheneOS-compatible fork.
Here’s the pragmatic reality:
-
The Hardware: Yes, the BOM increases. But the Kompakt is already a premium device, not a budget phone. The increase is manageable if it unlocks the trust signal.
-
The Patching: This is where the proposal saves resources. Mudita already patches AOSP monthly. Using a GrapheneOS base means inheriting the hardened kernel and security primitives rather than building them from scratch. The engineering burden shifts from creating security to maintaining the integration.
-
The Build: They apply the open-source GrapheneOS hardening patches to their own build. It’s signed with Mudita keys, not GrapheneOS keys.
And critically: This approach could actually kickstart an official partnership. By building the hardware and demonstrating the architecture first, Mudita provides GrapheneOS with the first non-Pixel/Motorola device that proves their security model works on E Ink. That’s a compelling case for them to officially certify the device, turning a “compatible fork” into a fully supported partnership.
The realistic ask isn’t “Mudita becomes a GrapheneOS partner.” It’s “Mudita builds hardware that could support it, and uses it as a foundation to earn that partnership.”
Idk why I’m even bothering to respond to copy pasted AI slop but here goes:
- The Hardware: The Kompakt costs $350, it’s not a “premium” device. If it suddenly cost $1000 (as the upcoming Motorola GOS devices do) people would notice
- The Patching: Mudita does not “already” patch AOSP 16 / 17 monthly (the versions GOS uses), they selectively patch their custom fork of AOSP 12 every couple months, and in any case the hardened kernel and “security primitives” whatever that means depend upon hardware to work
- The Build: Obviously GOS is not gonna sign a custom fork
And critically this is not going to kickstart an official partnership. See what they’ve said about working with FairPhone (a much larger company with a much more recent android version).
These are two features I wanted also. Smartphone makers keep making larger and larger screens because the using population is getting older and their eyesight is worse as they age. The Kompakt screen size, is a good size as it is for us younger people.
Yes, a pocketable size is important.
It’s actually nothing to do with bad eyesight, it’s more to do with the current obsession of having the biggest screen possible ….TV’s are another good example of this, I know people who have a small lounge with a wall mounted TV so big walking into the room is like flying to the sun. As soon as a bigger one is available they have to have it.
Excellent explanation and accurate summary
I love my Mudita. I’ve choose it very carefully among others and, please don’t make it “another e-ink android” device with huge screen. I wish this device be close to LP2 in size, however its small size will probably cause major coverage issues, so It’s better to have good reception than small size ![]()
My point here, is that Mudita Team made a lot of hard choices along the way and I choose this product, because They did the right choices (at least in my opinion). I understand that some of You wish to have “BigMe” made in EU, but this is not the idea here.
I hope Mudita stays true to itself and doesn’t give in to the temptation to follow trends. It has an unique character and I truly believe that this is the right path.
If You stay close to stock apps, it is “secure enough” (no internet browser, no emails, no banking apps, no social media, there isn’t much of a risk). This phone was made “ to use it as little as possible”.
If I have a choice, my brain can’t settle down and is constantly looking for a “better solution.” And in that case, there’s no point in buying a Mudita. My smartphone is just the same. I chose this product because it’s limited and I don’t have all those options. I only have a set of essential tools that I use when I need them, and I don’t grip my phone in my hand for 8 hours a day. Intentional use, not addiction.
Someone has already written about this. It’s not a good idea to keep alcohol in plain sight when you’re an alcoholic and struggling with addiction. That’s why this phone can’t run full Android, GrapheneOS, or a similar system. It should run Mudita OS K.
Better yet : port Mudita OS (the Pure version) to the Kompakt ! Lighter, faster, locked-down. ![]()
clear phone case plleeaassseeeeeee
To those of us who bough the concept of the Kompakt and not just the product, this post makes complete sense. We don’t want a smartphone, that’s precisely why we’re here.
The ability to sideload apps makes it possible for everyone to tweak the standard Mudita gave us within the intentional limitations that that were put there by them. This device is not and never should be a smartphone, the problem is many bought it with the intention of making into one, or are not honest with themselves about really wanting to use a smartphone.
If users want to install 200 apps on their Kompakt that’s their prerogative, where I have a problem is when they are trying to lobby Mudita to implement changes, globally to the device that many others do not need or want.
I would be happy for Mudita to ignore requests for change, in the way Apple do … every day there seems to be a new suggestion
TWO REQUESTS peaceful, soothing sounds from a mudita water fountain, peaceful trickle of water gives a nice sound, and perhaps it could be a place animals could drink from, solar and/or battery powered and secondly accompany with soft toned mudita wind chimes - Edit this would be separate from the Kompakt phone
You should get a Mudita Harmony…that sound is included in the Relaxation Library ![]()
Yup I use this library everyday! My Harmony goes from my bedside in the morning to my living room during the day where I use to relaxation sounds while I am reading, been doing this for 2 years now
