Mudita Kompakt washing machine test

Disaster! Last week I managed to accidentally perform a washing machine test on my daughter’s Mudita Kompakt (30C for about 1.5 hrs in a case you’re wondering). She was not impressed!

I immediately placed the phone on top of an insulated hot water tank for a couple of days to see whether it would dry out. Sadly no luck.

After checking a few times I finally bit the bullet and ordered a replacement, which arrived a couple of days ago.

In the meantime, I left the original Kompakt on top of the hot water tank, roasting away. After setting up the new phone yesterday I took another look at the original phone. I stuck it on charge and noticed a weird flicker on the screen. I replugged the power supply a couple of times, and jabbed the ‘unlock’ button a few times.

Low and behold the screen started to slowly return to life. It started off extremely murky, with lots of noise and burn in. But after a while of charging and returning to the lock screen a couple of times (seemed to refresh the screen somehow) it gradually improved to the point where it’s mostly recovered. There’s still a little burn in, it’s slightly faded, and there are a couple of apps where the screen gets into a bit of a tizz showing distortion/noise (not sure why it only affects some apps).

I tested a few other bits and pieces: camera - working, speaker - working, vibrate - working, torch - working, mic - unfortunately not working, just hiss which I guess is unsurprising given it was submersed for an hour and a half with detergent!

I wouldn’t recommend trying this at home, but 99% intact seems pretty impressive. A testament to how well this thing is put together (even if it wasn’t a particularly hot wash)!

So…does anyone from here or from Mudita know whether it’s possible to repair/replace the the mic as this would make a useful backup phone in case something untoward ever happens again?

Any pictures of the aftermath? Cheers

I had an unintentional swimming experience with MK in my pocket three months ago, didn’t manage to recover it. Completely dead. But hey, my kids got a phone!

Oh my goodness  Mudita Kompakt survived the wash cycle.
Although Mudita Kompakt has an IP rating of 54, we don’t recommend doing this.

Have you also tried keeping the phone in uncooked rice on the water heater. That’s how I saved my BBQ10 when I dropped in the toilet.

I once dropped uncooked rice in the toilet, but not even the emergency call on my old Nokia dumbphone could save it :stuck_out_tongue:

A few mins after first turning on the screen appears, burn in very prevalent on every update…

8 mins later, a little better, still some noise…

Much later, almost clear, a bit faded compared to new replacement phone. Burn in accumulates after a few screen updates:

I’ll bear the rice in mind for next time

@urszula do you happen to know whether it’s possible to restore/transfer contacts from one device to a new device. I’m in the very unusual situation of being able to backup post-disaster!

I have managed to find a solution at least for contacts:

adb shell content query --uri content://contacts/phones/ --projection display_name:number:notes > contacts.txt

Using sed I was able to coerce it into the following format with heading:

First Name,Middle Name,Last Name,Phonetic First Name,Phonetic Middle Name,Phonetic Last Name,Name Prefix,Name Suffix,Nickname,File As,Organization Name,Organization Title,Organization Department,Birthday,Notes,Photo,Labels,Phone 1 - Type,Phone 1 - Value
John,, Doe,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Mobile, +1 555 01000199

But please do let me know if there’s a more elegant solution with backup/restore.

@kefa Did you do a backup of this device?

Yes I managed to perform a backup post-washing machine incident. But I can only find the option to restore to the same device rather than the new replacement device. I might be missing something

There should be a trick such as take a backup on the new one, then adjust the name of the old backup and swap.

You either laugh too much, or you drink too much coffee, or both
Either way I’d love to hear you laugh in Polish :stuck_out_tongue:
(I’d need a translator though)

Hi there - I tried this to restore a backup from a different MK (I have 3 now for my two kids + the original washed one) to the original washed one.

The restore started and got to 96% and then I got the message:

Other than that it does seem to have worked.

One weird observation is that messages seem to be merged with any already on the target device but contacts, notes seem to be replaced. Is this expected behaviour?

There is a trick to this. Our team helped another user out before. Let me ask them again about the specifics.

@YYZ Here you go… I sound like a hyaena

LOL. I didn’t expect you to post this
But whatever you are doing there, my translator had problems with the Polish accent  Do all Polish people have to lie on their back in the snow, waving their limbs like crazy in order to be able to laugh ?

Only when making snow angels…This winter we’ve had pretty good snow fall. The last few years were pretty bleak.

Same here. And -20 C. The coldest winter in 10 years
