Mudita Group Messaging Insight

Hi All,

I just wanted to share that my group messaging is now working! It seems to require data!

I had disabled RCS and it seemed to get worse. I had a text and call only prepaid plan with ATT. I switched to the unlimited data plan. It now seems to work! I hope this helps anyone else.

Thank you for letting us know. It’s important to highlight since there were some users who were experiencing issue.

While simple one-to-one calls and SMS texts will work with basic call/text plan & no internet data plan is needed.
Usually, group messaging on cell phones uses MMS, not plain SMS. MMS often requires cellular data to be enabled, even when you are only sending text in a group chat. It may not use your “internet browsing” data allowance in the normal sense, but the phone still needs carrier data/APN access to send and receive MMS.

Picture messages also need data (or WiFi) as well as RCS, iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal

Thank you, @urszula, for the best explanation that I have seen to date – that MMS requires cellular data to be enabled on a cellphone, even if (as in the USA) one’s cellular carrier excludes the MMS use of cellular data from one’s cellular-data allowance.

Now I also appreciate why some text-messaging apps (such as QUIK) let a user choose when texting simultaneously to two+ people whether:

  • to send individual messages to each person, which requires only SMS unless the message is long
    OR
  • to send as group message, which requires MMS, because Signaling System 7 (SS7), which is a set of telephony signaling protocols developed in the 1970s and is used by SMS, was never designed to transmit the “participants” data in a group-text message.
