Missing SMS with offline+?

Just an update: I’m apparently missing longer texts as well, albeit intermittently. In the last two weeks I’ve had someone send longer text messages and they didn’t go through (and then they showed them to me in person). I called the carrier and again, they are confirming that the text is arriving to and being dispatched from their server. I’m guessing this might be an MMS issue?? Of course, if I send myself a long message right now from a secondary number, it will come through no problem.
For my part, I am awaiting a new SIM card to switch carriers and see if that changes anything (TMobile USA–any support or feedback from others?).
Struggling with these basic texting issues, Mudita. Any help would be appreciated.

@wander When text go over 160 characters they sometimes get split up into 2 segments OR they just get converted into MMS.
It usually goes like this:
1-160 character(s) = 1 SMS segment
161-306 characters = 2 SMS segments

Do you have MMS enabled on your device?

If I go to “Settings” → “Network and Internet” → “Mobile Network”, it only shows “Mobile data” and “Roaming”, both of which are on. I don’t have the “MMS messages” option, even if I push the “Advanced” button on the bottom.

I think that particular toggle appears when the first one is off.

@wander 1st dialog on the photo that Urszula has posted appears in SMS app (click 3 line icon near Pen icon).

And like @buiosu said that toggle appears when Mobile Data is off. The 2nd photo is from the Network & Internet / Mobile network.

Hmm. That’s odd. let me go back to the team with this. It might be a carrier issue.
There was on user whose problem ended up that their phone plan did not include MMS messages. I’m not saying this is your issue, but I just want to make sure we cover all bases.

@buiosu and @gezimos are correct – I turned the “Mobile data” toggle off and the “MMS messages” toggle appeared. I’ve turned “Mobile data” off and “MMS messages” on for now as you showed in your photo @urszula .
Although I’m curious–are they mutually exclusive? Theoretically, if I have “Mobile data” ON, shouldn’t I also receive MMS messages?
Thank you all for your continued help and troubleshooting with me.

I’ve really been enjoying my MK, but I’m having the same or a similar issue.

In the last 24 hours (well within the retry period) I know of two people who have sent me a message but those messages have not come through. I know that my friend’s messages have reached T-Mobile because I’ve downloaded my usage analytics from their customer platform and can see the matching timestamp and phone number.

I don’t have my offline+ mode on for more than a few minutes at a time since it’s only ever on by accident. It often catches the ledge of my pockets when I’m sliding my phone in, or the switch will just get moved a tiny bit which will still trigger offline+ mode even if the switch is up . I’m personally not a fan of the offline+ switch for this reason, maybe mine is dysfunctional?

Because my phone is never supposed to be on online+ mode, and I often check to make sure it’s not accidentally on offline+ mode; my phone is online 98% of the day. So, shouldn’t my phone be online enough to catch a retry from T-Mobile if I didn’t receive a message?

I am using QUIK instead of the stock app since it’s more developed. But I don’t anticipate that this is causing issues with receiving texts because both the stock Mudita app and QUIK seem to reference the same internal Android SMS DB? Though, I’m not an Android dev so I could be totally wrong about this.

This leads me to think that Mudita OS is sometimes failing to receive messages from T-Mobile even if it’s online? Is there anything that can be done about this? Is there anything I can help provide to help track down any bugs?

Thanks!

Were the messages direct SMS or group messages by chance?
What’s your OS version?

Offline+ followed by delivery delays/issues could be due to carrier’s settings re missed delivery retry interval. I’m afraid modern approach assumes that the devices are online 99% of time.

Other than that, it could be group messaging issues that should’ve been fixed in OS K 1.4.0.

Perhaps the SIM card was associated with iMessages before and de-registration must be triggered but I’m not familar with all that.

Perhaps any future phone with Offline+ should have the switch in same form and size, but flipped vertically to avoid pocket pull flipping. @urszula

I will pass this on to the team.

They were direct SMS messages

MuditaOS K 1.4.0 (I updated a couple weeks ago)

In case this is the reason, could I disable the offline+ mode through the shell? Or if it’s purely a hardware switch… I suppose I could just rip the switch out right? :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I was using an iPhone 6 months ago, but I deregistered my number in iMessage when I got the MK. So it’s not an iMessage thing.

Given what you said I’d expect very unfortunate timing with Offline+ or software issue.
If you want to avoid getting into Offline+, something less invasive would be to stuck some plasticine to dry out in the switch gap, hopefully that will make Offline+ switch unusable but without inflicting irreversible damage. I’m not sure about software options in that regard.

@urszula, thank you for the detailed explanation about how Offline+ mode affects the transmission of SMS messages to one’s Kompakt, perhaps to the point that one’s cellular carrier deletes such an undelivered message within hours or days.

A simple workaround in the USA is voicemail. All cellular carriers here support voicemail and will not automatically delete voicemail messages until waiting a set period, such as 30 to 60 days.*

*By the way, I have a voicemail message from three months ago that still resides in my voicemail inbox after I listened to it and chose the save-message option. My experience is that U.S. carriers will retain played-and-saved voicemail messages indefinitely.

I will ask the team about this, however, sometimes, third-party apps do behave differently on Mudita Kompakt.

Made an account to echo @littlestbrother above comments.

Love the MK, but I have been plagued with messages that never get delivered to the phone. I am on Verizon and also switched to the QUIK app after a couple months because of bugs with the stock app, but experienced this on both apps.

Since I started using the phone, I would occasionally get a call from my wife because I had not responded to her texts for most of the day while I was working. The offline mode was never switched on and my phone would be sitting on a stand on my desk, so I know did not accidentally trigger the switch on for any period of time in my pocket. It only seemed to happen with my wife and she would just call so I figured it was not a big deal.

However, I traveled home for the holidays and while there I found out from a few friends that I was missing a significant number of messages that were never delivered to my phone during the holiday period. The phone was not off and offline mode was not enabled during these times, so I don’t see how I would not have caught any of the retries.

For reference, this has happened throughout every OS update since I got the phone. They were all direct SMS messages (although I still have trouble with group messages after 1.4.0). I also turned RCS off on my old phone before using the MK

I really would like to keep using the phone but when it fails to receive messages it is a challenge! Happy to help out how I can.

Since your network provider is Verizon, it could be APN settings. Have you set the correct APN settings for Verizon? How about your MMS settings?

I had seen those options at some point before and enabled them, but I can’t seem to find them now. I do have a variety of other options in their place.

I have also reviewed the steps stevenjc123 took in this post Verizon not working on Mudita Kompakt - #40 by stevenjc123 and had already done what was recommended there, including APN settings.

@muditakompaktuser When you’re in the SMS app tap the 3 lines with the dots, then tap the SIM- either SIM1 or SIM2 if you have it.
Then all the messaging options will be there.
