I actually do this as well with files I need- like event tickets etc. Very cool function. Super easy.

I was very curious as well and today I found an option that works for the pictures. When you plug in the MK it will try to do the regular mounting but go to Settings → Connected Devices → USB Preferences and on the USE USB FOR section change it to PTP (Stands for Picture transfer Protocol) then on your ipad open the photos app and the MK will show up as a source (under Devices section) from which you can import photos.
